AFAIK, Principals don’t get bonuses, they get shares. The end of fiscal year closing of the books would drive any additional payment (or payback) based on yearly financial performance vs. budget, which would be paid out/charged per share.
MDs have a lot of variable comp, on the other hand, I think the bonus could be almost half of their comp.
Almost all new Principals (not counting direct admit) start with the same share allocation at Deloitte. I think a few exceptions are made, giving some additional starting shares to SMs that were near the top of the range, to avoid giving them a pay cut with their promotion.
I don’t know precisely what the number is. Performance then drives increases in shares over time. There is also some weirdness with taxes in the first years as a principal, including what’s known as the “tax cliff” which is a massive one-time tax payment a couple years in, that can be a shock if not properly saved for.
