I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

I would go to a smaller place, someplace independent if you can find it where you can make a difference and an impact on the creative, have more face time with higher ups. Don’t go some place that’s too big and corporate or else you’ll just be another face.
I think it matters a lot. It’s where you learn the basics and develop your “style”. And it’s not necessarily the very first place you work but where you work in the first 5 years of your career
Yah, small shops are the place to be. You get to make more noise in those places without being stifled constantly. It matters, but it doesn’t mean you can’t go to a no-name place and get some good book work. The environment, more than the name, has to be conducive to that, though.
Thanks y’all for the love. But I’m international so my best bet at getting sponsored are big agencies :( within that context does it make a difference as a Junior if you work at a Wieden or “insert some other less popular big agency"
Wieden duh. Where u work matters, like acd1 said.
I wish I had held out for something better. Took a good paycheck and got very little book work. My career feels a bit stagnant now because of it.
Names matter. My first job was a place that was considered fairly hot at the time. My second one was at a big name traditional place that had a rep for being a bit old and stodgy. Even though the work I did at my second job was MUCH better, it was harder to find a job because I worked there.
In my opinion, it's less about the agency and more about the account(s) you'll be working on. That's going to determine how many opportunities you get and the quality of them. Also, if you're interviewing with your future CD, get to talking to them about their review style, how they operate. You want someone you think will potentially be interested in mentoring you (or at least handing down cool briefs).
Names only matter if we wanna make advertising more of a popularity contest than it already is. Don’t get me wrong, ride the waves of great agencies if you can, but also seek out the ripest opportunities in more obscure places if you have to. Might be surprised how quickly you can come up or get your name actually on shit at places that are fiending for talent.
It’s a good learning opp. Even though I had numerous internships at big agencies (O&M, etc.) I realized i was in the wrong path. Easier to figure it out sooner than later
