Depends on client needs and relative urgency of ask.
Client service business. The goal would be to not work. But if a client calls, our job is to respond.
I stopped when I determined it wasn’t worth it anymore.
This is exactly right
You do it when you absolutely have to. No reason to be a hero - no one cares. Do it when it is absolutely critical and that's it. (Yes I am working a few hours both days this weekend, but only because we have no choice due to a public company deadline. Most weekends I just check emails to see if something blew up at a client and whether we need to react immediately)
No one cares. This is correct. In fact most will find it threatening if you are working on the weekend so it works against you.
To me it is always a clear ‘admission of defeat’. Something must have gone horribly wrong to make it necessary, and it almost never is as urgent as it feels.
With that mindset i have found it much easier to prioritize on thursdays & fridays, and really focus on what truly needs to happen.
Don’t get too cozy with the safety net! It’s there for emergencies, not to allow you to slack during the week.
I consistently work about two hours each morning on the weekends - usually just email management
I can probably count on one hand the time number of times I actually worked on the weekend over the past year.
I will spend a few minutes scanning my inbox on Sunday, but typically don't do actual work on the weekend. I try to keep weekends blocked off for family stuff.
Overall minimize work except for some “me” work
Client work only if there is an urgent proposal and/or SteerCo or workshop type that’s off the rails and on Monday
Otherwise, as said above, usually more “admin” type work on email management and “me” time to plan and think ahead for the week
I generally don't have to but do just to catch up or get something like a training done. There's been 1 time in 5 years I had to because of client request.
I usually do some email and pending items for the next week on Sunday evening, helps me to start the week a tiny bit more relaxed
