How much money do you need to live comfortably as a family of 4 in a city like Chicago/ Miami/ ATL? I am not talking a luxurious lifestyle but nice vacations and great education for kids fully paid.

For a counterpoint, you could adopt the Mr. Money Mustache lifestyle, who for many years spent well under $40K per year for their entire family.

Fair points. Although I’ll admit I was very disheartened to hear the news.
Those numbers are really high for ATL. Husband and I collectively make about $230k and live very comfortably despite large student loans on both sides. Nearing payoff of part of the loans and getting ready to welcome baby 1 along with huge paycut for one of us. We're well ahead of most people our age financially. That said, we bought in a really good school district to avoid private school tuition.
300k household is about 96th percentile of HH earnings in the US. So only 4% of the US population lives a ‘middle class lifestyle’ and 96% live lower class lifestyles? Seems a little skewed. A better definition would be Pew Research’s definition where closer to 50% are ‘middle income households’
Think they’re talking about big cities like SF
Here’s an idea, don’t chose to live in the most expensive cities on earth. Problem solved!
This is some Suze Orman grade-A bull.
The reason FIRE even exists as a defined movement is the coalescence around MMM ideas ... who spends sub $40,000 every year in a walkable Denver ex-burb with views of the Rockies. Given he only has one child, and until recently a wife, but I don’t think a second kid would cost him another $260,000/year.
Agree 100%. Even tighter if you have school loans, started making more money later in life thus losing out on the real estate/stock market boom, or don't have family money.

Cut food by 1/3 to 1/2. Cut entertainment by half. Cut vacations by 1/3. Cut charity by 100% and donate your time. Could also reduce car.
....tldr cost costs by living in the time of a pandemic
I don’t think atl fits that category
That’s helpful. Felt really unrealistic to me. Any websites that are more realistic and provide insightful information/ examples ( e.g., Fatfire)?
