I’ve gone through layoffs. The most important thing is to keep yourself busy and be positive. Even if you don’t have financial challenges, it’s mind wrecking to be staying home without a job.
After spending few days lazy, I used to actually get ready in the morning and go sit at the local library. My family and I felt much more normal that way and it helped me focus instead of feeling down
Readjust lifestyle to your current household income. Find him a new job. Support and love each other.
Been fired twice before. Recognize it’s an emotional journey if not rollercoaster. Enable him to acknowledge that. And try and support him through the lows. He needs to stay active, well rested, avoid drinking (to dull the pain), and network network network.
I was laid off once, not the greatest feeling to say the least. My biggest recommendation - stay busy! Whether it is finding a job, doing house projects, spending time with the family. I recommend asking people to do informational interviews and then asking them about being a reference for any open positions
You can get him on your health insurance. He has had a qualifying event and is now eligible.
He has health insurance till end of August. So I'll add him then. Thanks for the reminder though.
OP - Are you each on your own healthcare insurance or on one plan? If he’s on his own or both of you are on his plan, investigate getting him/both of you onto the ACN plan. While he/you could continue with his plan under COBRA, your costs are likely to jump up significantly.
COBRA? hmm I'll need to look into this. I thought he got to keep his current insurance at the same premium until august
That's tough. Sorry to hear it. At least you will be ok for a while. Does he have a plan of action to secure a new job?
It's great that you'll be able to live on one income. So many households need both to survive.
Sorry to hear..maybe take a bit of time to focus yourselves and clear some thoughts. When the time is right, I’m sure you’ll get right back up, you got this!
He shouldn’t take it personally. It takes hard work to do well but it takes and equal amount of being at the right place at the right time. Conversely you can just get unlucky. If it’s poor performance, then it’s a good time to reflect and remediate any issues that might be there. Either way, take some time and explore new opportunities. It could be the best thing that will happen to him. It was for me.
Thanks for the tips, guys. Most of his department was laid off today, including his boss. I know he is taking it as a personal blow despite it not being performance related so mostly focused on supporting him emotionally right now. I'm sad because he really is great at what he does and I hope its doesn't make him doubt himself.
