I am an attorney with over 10 years of experience in government with a few significant regulation projects under my belt. My expertise is in international tax. Does anyone have a sense of the demand out there and what I could expect in terms of title/pay right now either at a big 4 or maybe a law firm?

I suspect director at big 4, does that sound right? If so, what sort of salary should I expect? Trying to get a feel to see if I want to leave government before I start talking to people.

You can probably go to of counsel at a big law firm
I think salary starts around $450k.

like

SM/D at big4 (some have one or the other, if they have both it should be D). Comp could be anywhere from 200-325 depending on how much the firm wanted you.

Depending on what the regulatory projects are could sneak a WNT spot. That should put you in the 400s.

Your best bet is probably a National Tax position. It would be difficult for you to take on a client servicing / project management role without retooling, but your technical expertise will be valuable in a National Tax role. If you’re interested in PwC, DM me and I’d be happy to connect you with the right people.

like

It depends on practice. In general, national tax positions have better hours (50 sounds about right). For me personally, it’s probably 45-55 on average (30-40 billable and the rest various admin, trainings etc.).

Not an amazing time at the Big 4 rn but always possible.

Why are there glass ceilings on salaries in NL?

Considering that cost of living has gone up significantly here, doesn't the market need some adjustment?

Is salary just a function of years of seniority?

I do understand the case of better WLB and social benefits than the US. Hence not a direct comparison.

Anyone who understands the market willing to share their take?

Thanks!

Anyone have any thoughts on a fair salary for a part time virtual tax prep-focused position? I’ll be bringing 75-100 clients with me.

Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?
