2 easiest options:
1. Internal move in your current company if available. Talk to your current manager about your career goals and state you’d like to move across at some point in the near future and would like to explore your options. If your manager doesn’t proactively offer to do so for you, reach out to someone in leadership in the brand team to explore that possibility.
From my perspective - having someone who understands marketing processes as well as the company can be just as appealing if not more so than an external hire. You can teach the hard skills needed.
2. Explore junior branding roles in other companies. Your lack of experience in the field may make it harder to move laterally into a branding role because you’ll be competing with people with the specific experience, so look to junior manager/assistant/specialist/coordinator roles.
As for courses, I’m not sure there’s much I could suggest for building hard skills in this space - if you can write a brand positioning statement (who is the target customer, what is their emotional/rational need, what is your product’s key point of difference, what are the reasons the customer should believe the point of difference), you’ll be ahead of 75% of the candidates I interviewed for brand positions in the last three years. And those positioning statement elements should be part of your current thinking when approaching social media strategy.
Note: my job title is a business unit I run, not the job I do. I’ve worked in strategic/brand/product marketing for the last 20 years
Try and network your way in and be willing to take a lower position. Also be specific about what you want to do on the brand side. You said branding so do you have design experience? There’s been alot of posts on Fishbowl lately of people wanting to get into brand. I can say as someone currently in the job market, it’s brutal. There are tons of people applying for one job. I recently talked to a recruiter and there were 500 people that applied for a role that was just up for a few days.
