Simple answer, Just do the 2 weeks notice. You don’t owe the company anything, and it seems that you aren’t sure about your own job stability if you let your manager know.
honey well
From what I understand cause the same thing is happening to me in a few months. Just give two weeks. No harm no foul. Totally acceptable and fine as a standard. Honestly two weeks is too much in my personal opinion but two weeks is a good amount where you can feel confident and can sleep at night. You’ll be ok! Good luck with your big move!
Just give the two weeks. Maybe tell them you can be available as a contractor from overseas? Don’t bank on it, but this will at least give them an option
Would love to know how you folks are getting jobs out of country . Do you guys have citizenship in these countries? I would think it’s hard to expect the foreign company to sponsor a work visa for you ? More so, will companies even look at your resume if you’re from a different country.
Depends on the country, your citizenship/age (youth mobility/working holiday) and experience. I find that technical is very universal (engineering, software, healthcare -role/country dependant). Also recognition of top tier schools is different. Most European jobs will recognize a very small number of top tier universities, but other universities that are known as very strong in the us will not be seen as a plus. Also, you are seen as a flight risk, and if they are putting more resources into getting you over, they will likely be concerned about you getting homesick and running home.
I spent 3 years in the uk as a Canadian and given the need in my industry (safety engineering) I was being offered visa sponsorship to stay from other firms. It’s possible to do, but I think you probably will be at a disadvantage to a local candidate with a similar background.
if you know you can get a layoff package and you secured a job for sure elsewhere (good on you for venturing the world I would have loved to do that, jealous!) then go for it get that layoff package!
That is completely understandable. I recently resigned from a company that I too cared about to relocate with my spouse. I gave a 2 weeks notice and offered to stay an extra week or so to give them time to shuffle to have coverage. Wishing you the very best in your next chapter.
Lost my gov position back in March. I'm decided to relocate but it's been really hard to find remote work or secure a position overseas. I got my ESL cert as a back up but even with that the agencies seem very sketchy.
Yikes that is a tough situation to be in. If it were me, I would wait and give two weeks notice. I wouldn't want to get laid off early and not have that income. But at the end of the day you have to do what is best for you.
I moved out of the US in July, and I have a very supportive manager and very supportive teams. I let my manager and HR know 2 months in advance.
I was able to continue to work with my teams/clients almost 3 more months remotely, due to Work Your World existing, and was then forced to resign (despite nothing changing re: work executed) because the groupe wouldn’t allow past 90 days abroad. Unfortunate but understandable and out of my/our control. I’m now looking for work (and i’m likely to be kicked from fishbowl soon). Amazing that you have employment secured overseas - congrats!
Based on how you presented the question, I’d agree with others here in saying you should give them the two weeks notice.
As an alternative, you can let people know with more advance to prep responsibility handoffs/etc. and then IF a layoff were to occur, you’d be eligible for unemployment income until you leave.
You don't get kicked off of Fishbowl for being unemployed; I've consistently held my account throughout multiple bouts of job changes. If your company has its own official bowl, you might not be able to stay in it if you change your email address to continue receiving notifications. (That's the other thing, if you didn't proactively change your Fishbowl email address before you left, see if you can do it now.)
I wouldn't mention it if I was you. It's courteous of you to want to give them time to plan ahead, but unless you're willing to go 5 months without a paycheck, it's just not worth it. If they don't immediately let you go, they will as soon as they find a replacement.
How long did it take you to land that new position out for the country ? My wife and I are looking to do the same, and have started searching for new jobs in South America
Is the company a global company? If so I'm surprised they wouldn't accommodate. If it's not global then it's not surprising. Just give the 2 week notice when it's time to leave.
