I was in the same boat. There are a few approaches you can take.
1) Do Andrew Ng's Stanford Machine Learning course on Coursera and get a certificate,
2) Talk to your leadership and ask to be put on a data science project, and/or
3) Pursue an advanced degree in data science/analytics.
I did all three and was able to make the jump. Can highly recommend Georgia Tech's Online Master of Science in Analytics (OMSA) program, as well.
I didn't really choose, to be honest. I was with another large consulting firm who paid for my OMSA tuition. So, they chose for me.
My undergrad was in CS, and while I'd be interested in pursuing OMSCS later on, right now I want a data focus. I'm enjoying the analytical side of things.
Thanks a lot - I will look into these I’m not really trying to back to university to be honest since quite a bit of my undergraduate and postgraduate involved statistical modelling and complex mathematical modelling to do with thermodynamics etc would you say this is a must have?
Thanks currently my firm only does EPM stuff it’s a small boutique so I’d have to move to another firm - our EPM tool is implementing ML/AI predictive analytics so will try and get into that at least so I have a little foot in the door at least actually implementing some of these with real clients then use that + my python,SQL knowledge etc as leverage hopefully get some traction
What would anyone who’s done this already do? I’ve been using kaggle and building a portfolio on GitHub etc to show my abilities
