I decided to formally open a design studio and wfh forever. The last two years have blessed me with autonomy I've never known. I'm looking for gems of advice or resources you might have. Mt. Freelance has been invaluable.

First, define your work; are you a freelancer working on a project-basis for a variety of agencies? Or are you a self-employed, business person, working directly for other businesses? There is a difference. If you are going self-employed; - consider focusing in a vertical or horizontal market (like specializing in health care vs specializing in websites) — or specialize in both. This will help you to differentiate, offer more specific skills and target audiences for business. You can work towards this goal — but don’t put it off forever. (You can also do multiples for either v/h; web and social, healthcare and tech) - consider all of the skillsets that are within an agency — Acct management, production, strategy, new business, creative, accounting etc. make sure to consider those things both for yourself and your business and how you manage your clients. Don’t leave unintentional gaps in service — or in managing your business. - determine whether your client has a marketing department or an in-house creative department — this will tell you where they are lacking in knowledge or experience and where they will be looking for you to fill in the gaps. - find solid teammates— other independent business owners to team up with on projects to fill those roles, as needed.

I’ve been freelancing for 6 years. Mt Freelance is a great resource. Also Freelancers Union, American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), and Graphic Artists Guild. And, find an accountant used to working with freelancers. Best of luck.

like

How does the accountant help you as a FL or small studio— do they advise on how to maximize deductions/expenses etc.? I see accounted mentioned as being important…

i did the same! best of luck to us both. may we write off all of our meals and purchases 😂

Got a lead on a good accountant?

Need any help? I don't have the book to go solo yet, but I'm sick of big agency work.

like

I'm barely off the ground and designing an agency site. But always looking for interested parties. Lets chat.

I would say...work on your workflow...make it the most productive as you can...also consider that you could have multiple workflows for multiple purposes (eg. switching between daily work and music production or content creation...)

I miss the salary…!

Dog owners: any thoughts on how to accommodate a new puppy into the consulting lifestyle (about me: I don’t travel, have a SO that works less than me to share responsibility with but they cannot WFH)

I know we all love the work from home (or do we?) but does anyone actually miss traveling for their consulting engagements and all the fun that goes along with it? The late nights at the office then the bar and random hookups and excitement and all that? Sure it’s a grind but I think I actually miss it too. Maybe I just miss seeing people at work or seeing people at all. I wonder if we’ll ever get back to that.

I recently got a puppy but have avoided telling people at work out of fear they will assume I’m not really working when I’m WFH if I have a puppy. Am I being irrational?

I really want to get a puppy given WFH currently, but nervous about pulling the trigger given that we are likely returning to travel at some point in 2021. I’m single and live by myself, so worried about what the pups lifestyle would look like if I returned to travel 1-3 days a week (knowing that 3-days per week is certainly not fair to the dog). How have others thought about this? I’ve raised 4 dogs growing up, so I’m well aware of what it takes from a training / attention standpoint.

WFH has had me barefoot at home pretty much all day except when I go to run errands every now and then for 1-2 hours. My feet are not used to being back in shoes for 8+ hours a day. Had my feet all messed up hurting and veins popping every where. Should I get new shoes? Any tips? TIA

I currently WFH. However I expect that we will return to the office by summer or fall. I live 1.5 miles away from work, but I don’t have a car. I want to avoid buying a car if possible. What are the best ways to get to work. I live in the city so biking is a little too dangerous for me. Any ideas?

My boyfriend is on unemployment. I’m getting seriously irritated by him playing video games from noon to 4am while I WFH. He’s also being perpetually happy and I need advice on how not to kill him.

Wow…covid is really over. I live in a rural area where we knew covid was happening but it never really impacted the community or daily life. However when I’d go into the city it was very very obvious there were huge life impacts and fear. I just went into the city for the first time in about 3 months and it’s like covid never happened. It makes me wonder how many other things that have drastically changed (like wfh and hand sanitizer) will go back to normal as people go back to normal.
