I don’t think I can afford to buy a home in California anytime soon so I’m thinking of moving to another state. What are other good states to live in with more affordable house prices and that would have a decent job market (I,e, accounting in financial services)? I’m close to family so will have two family members moving with me who I take care of. Asian friendly communities also will help. Thanks for any advice :)

I moved from California to Charlotte 7 years ago for that exact reason. I’ve been really happy in Charlotte.

Charlotte is great and housing is still affordable.

Oh, how I miss the Asian markets and restaurants of Atlanta.

Dallas housing market is wild right now but nothing compared to California and ton of jobs coming here. Lots of areas in upper dall area such as plano, Richardson Allen Frisco have big Asian communities too

NC - Charlotte and Raleigh are both great options. Both are affordable and rank highly on best places to live lists - close to the mountains and beach.

I moved from LA suburbs to Dallas suburbs exactly 2 years ago. Wish I would have moved sooner. In 2 years we’ve saved ~ $80k between state income tax and housing costs, etc. We both got raises in our new jobs too but I’m not including that in the savings above. I miss having nice beaches nearby but I’ll take financial freedom as a trade off.

Bellevue Washington

Right but OP is looking for cheaper places to live. Seattle/Bellevue isn’t that lol

Washington is by far cheaper than California. But is it “cheap” no. Cheaper yes. I guess it comes down to what the op can afford

Washington, live outside of the city and work remotely.

Alternatively Oregon and do the same thing or commute in. Portland isn't as bad as Seattle.

I thought Kansas City was pretty cool. Pretty low COL, but no mountains. So there's that.

$530k HHI, $250k cash on hand, $1.2M investments/retirement. Plan to buy $800-900k house as our first home, but thinking of the best approach given rates today. My thinking is that we (i) put $200k+ down and get a 5/1 ARM. (ii) put everything we save moving forward toward paying down the principal (after maximizing retirement accounts). Should be able to do $100k per year. (iii) If rates go down below 4.5ish % for 15 year fixed, refinance and stop aggressive payment. Thoughts on this approach?

Under contract for nearly 1.1M. Wife and I are at HHI $315k. Will go up in the future, $400k in 3 years and $500k possible in 5-7 years. We have $300k in non-retirement funds, $260k of which will go towards acquiring the house. We have 2 kids and will probably reduce (not maxing) retirement accounts next 18 months to do this. Anyone have any thoughts or feedback? We’ll have to live on a budget and watch but I feel we’ll get used to it and income will grow.
