Never close, always downgrade. Separate out the ones that aren’t serving you anymore, call those banks and have them downgrade you to the free version of the card, when they arrive, toss them in a draw and don’t worry about it (maybe pull them out now and again if the bank says they’ll close it after a year or two for non-use).
Downgrading keeps that entire line of credit open so your score won’t drop and any points you have with that card won’t be lost. Redemption may be a little different depending on the card. I only keep one or two main cards on me that I actually use and the other 10-15 or more are in a draw somewhere. I really only use one at a time though because I’m almost always churning points to earn a new bonus.
Second this. I made lots of card in the beginning to pay off my school and once I paid them off, I rotate depending on deals.
This is literally me. Following.
I used to have a lot, but now I use two 99% of the time. Delta Amex Reserve for everything and Discover for the rotating 5% categories, which I then buy gift cards with that give you 25% more than the purchased amount. A third visa for rare occasions when places don’t accept the first two
Yes, I used to only carry Amex and Discover. It's not as straight forward in countries outside US. Always keep a Master Card or Visa with you at all times.
Just replied in another thread but I’ll echo it here—I’ve been considering cutting down to just two: the CSR and the CFF (Freedom Flex)
CSR for dining and travel, CFF for rotating and drugstores (and for a limited time, supermarkets)—buying gift cards as needed at the highest-earning place I can, to use for non-cat spend, most of which would be gas).
Downgrade the cards to the no annual fee version and leave them open so you don’t hurt your score. I have about 4 that I don’t use anymore and mainly use my venture X to optimize points but I still have them open. Haven’t had any issues.
