Thanks for sharing. This resonates with me so much. It’s easy to jump for more money, and in some cases, you get lucky when joining a new firm that your personality and experience resonates with leadership. Other times, you have to wait in line and it’s not a good fit. You get the salary and then they expect way more out of you. The long term relationships if you stay at a firm are worth it, if you’re a high performer in my opinion, because you also have that safety net of longevity. Unfortunately, firms have the tendency to put 85% of performance review scores in “achieved expectations” so people don’t know they are appreciated. (3 out of 4 in our firm). How would people know they are above the pack or is it because no one cares about longevity with an employer anymore?
I did this earlier in my career and regret it. I stayed at firms for 2 years and would leave. I see people from my entry level class and the year after now getting promoted to Senior Manager and Director. It was a very short sighted looking back on it. But to answer your question, for me it got really awkward having to explain the bouncing around. I decided that when I was hired at my current firm I would just stay for the long haul and try to climb as fast as possible.
