I got a competitive job offer in San Diego and some of the people I’ve spoken to keep telling me to not go to California because “that place is a dumpster fire”. I’ve read things online about taxes and cost being very high but it doesn’t seem any different than a large east coast city (except the Bay Area). It’s the most populous state so clearly that hasn’t deterred 40 million people. But I don’t understand why people keep telling me it’s a bad idea?

Perhaps their politics? Are these people of a particular political bent? Bashing California and NYC (and major metropolitan areas) has become the favorite pastime of a certain political ilk.

Also, it appears that being a Kardashian is sufficient to run for high political office. :-)

I grew up in LA. Left the state, came back for a few years while my wife went to law school at Stanford. Moved to a much lower-taxed environment now and my wife is considering job opportunities in California. I can't say I ever want to move back. There is too much group think. I worked at PayPal and some of the other tech firms. Unless you very closely identify with their politics and ideology, it is the most controlled speech environment I've ever seen. My dad went to UC Berkeley at the height of the free speech movement, now unless you espouse exactly what they want you to, they will do anything they can to remove your voice, some of the most intolerant people I've ever met in my life.

The homeless issues are like no other place I've seen and a direct result of the politics and policies at play here. You get what you reward. There are over 50k homeless people in LA county alone.

California was a paradise but the people in charge have ruined it over the last 40 years of my life. The regulations strangle businesses. At some point, if it isn't already happening, businesses will find friendlier places for them. When that happens, the jobs will go with them.

I loved the climate, hated the traffic, property costs were artificially high because of the onerous regulations, and if you are illegal, you likely have more rights and benefits than if you are legally here. Commit a crime and if you are illegal, they'll likely just let you walk. That is how I was attacked and required almost 100 stitches to sew my abdomen up from a knife attack by one of our friendly, wouldn't harm anyone, illegal/undocumented aliens. Can't bring back my cousin either who was killed by a similar drunk illegal/undocumented alien who had been released 3 times before.

If you have kids, schools generally suck. As for how good the environment is, ask them why they built one of the most expensive schools in the US (I think something like $400mil) on a hazardous waste dump. Google LA USD Belmont. Just more examples of governmental idiocy at work there.

The income taxes don't even begin to cover all the taxes and fees you get hit with. California is like living in the world's largest HOA. If you have any experience with homeowners associations, you'll know how bad this can be.

I loved California growing up. Politics are killing the goose that laid the golden egg. The state is the epitome of the road to hell is paved with good intentions. California prides itself on how forward-thinking it is, and wants to be a role model for how things should be everywhere. Why are so many people fleeing the state? Ask yourself why HP, Tesla, Oracle, CBRE, have bolted from the state. Think about the HP one. HP had its roots forever there. Yet the state and local governments don't seem to care. Heads are in the sand.

Sorry for a long sort of rant but I spent over 40 years in the state and watching its decline has been incredibly painful. Hopefully not too late to turn it around.

Of all the cities that are worth living in in the US, San Diego is not nearly as expensive as they’re making it sound

like

I grew up in LA and lived in NY for 5 years before moving back. Depends on the lifestyle you want. CA is definitely way less stressful. Yeah it’s expensive but everywhere is expensive now. San Diego is definitely the right option. No one has ever gone to San Diego and said “I definitely wouldn’t live there” unless they’re just negative Nancy’s about life. And for those people in Texas, get with the times. https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2021-05-19/wait-california-has-lower-middle-class-taxes-than-texas

California is the most naturally beautiful state in the Union and if it was its own country, a top 10 economy. Yes, taxes are higher but that’s what you pay to live there. So it boils down to your personal choice and professional aspirations

like

I live in LA for years. It's great. It's gotten more expensive over the years but not as bad as SF. San Diego is actually cheaper and even better work-life balance there, not to mention great seafood. I would live anywhere in LA wayyyy faster than moving to a place like Texas.

Waiting for “Cowboys don’t need power”

High taxes, gas prices, housing prices are primary things. Awesome state though. A lot of people are jealous.

I mean... I'm super progressive and went to school near LA, but I would NOT want to live there... Super dry and bad for my skin, terrible traffic + car accidents, I get really stressed driving, HCOL, big earthquake is overdue, fires, rising temperatures, everything is super far apart... Love the food tho.

Not sure how SD compares but a lot of the weather stuff probably overlaps

California is tough, unless you’re mentally aligned with their approach to taxes and politics.

Before you pick a place to live, look at the commute. I lived in SD for 13 years, weather got worse, ocean colder and traffic unbearable.

Traffic alone made me give up my car and move to NYC, best decision I've made. I'll gladly come back once the housing market there crashes, but will only live within 5 miles of work, which can take half hour+ in traffic

SD isn’t colder than the Bay. It is typically cooler than LA because it’s right near the water where LA proper is inland

likefunny

Take it! SD is great. Enjoy the experience for yourself and if you don’t like it, you can always leave.

What company are you moving to?

terrible idea haha

Oof - someone reported me for saying “it’s your loss”. People still hurting from November? 😂

Surprised how much traction this post got. A lot of people have very strong opinions about California haha

That’s because conservatives use California as proxy to show their hatred towards progressives. This is not about CA vs. TX discussion but more like Republicans vs. Democrats discussion.

like

Cali Native here: I've since lived in Midwest and South and will likely not go back because my quality of I've is higher AND cheaper. That said, I still keep my dentist in LA and I fly home whenever I want because I can afford to. Cali is great as long as you are OK with feeling poor.

Just go
