I got written up due to a millennial aged co-worker whose feelings I accidentally hurt during a meeting. I didn’t call the person any derogatory names or shout or do anything out of the ordinary. I just pointed out some strategic errors that would have effected the deliverables. I was told by my supervisor that people of this persons age don’t respond well to criticism and that I need to find another way to communicate when they’ve failed to complete a task properly. Anyone have any suggestions?

Since your company HR wrote you up I would ask them for training on how you should appropriately respond. They’re building a case to fire you so you need to be proactive

I had a report tell me that my criticism of her sloppy work “triggered” her. I asked it it triggered here to do better next time, because that was my goal. After that she started doing a better job. I could tell she thought about going above me for a second

No. Way. Omg. I would go through the roof. How about: Your sloppy work triggered me, and (fill in your version).

Maybe don’t call people out in public. It’s fucked up to blind side coworkers with criticism in an open forum. You don’t have an adversarial relationship. You’re teammates. You rise and fall together.

Feedback in private and praise in public. It has nothing to do with age. I’d be pissed at you too.

You’re correct. Tactfulness is key to managing, especially in a group setting. The key is to know each of your employees/subordinates well enough to know what approach best motivates them. Sometimes you are forced to be the bad cop, and have to lay out heavy consequences, but do it in a professional, yet stern and compassionate way. Ask yourself how you can inspire them and help them fix the issue.

Thick skin on both sides of the issue does help though.

Same thing happened to me. She criticized my copy without real meaning or back-up; just that she didn’t like a word I used. I came down hard like I always do when someone is arbitrary, after giving her every opportunity to explain herself. Next thing I know, I am in HR and it was exactly the same response from them.

I started working for a new law firm, much larger than the firm I was working for previously. The main attorney that I work under had noticed some mistakes I was making (I am a NY paralegal who took this position with the understanding that they’d be teaching me NJ and NYC real estate). Anyways, the attorney decided to tell the HR manager about the mistakes I had been making. Rather than HR discussing with me, the manager told my dramatic coworker to tell me..how should I handle this? Very hurt!

I posted this somewhere else before I remembered that I am in this bowl :) so, I changed jobs 6-7 months ago and I am realizing it is not a good fit. Leadership seem to not want to hear the truth so people tell them what they want to hear and if you don’t middle management gets pissed at you. I am seriously thinking about looking somewhere else. My question is how do you answer the “why are you looking to leave” question without bad mouthing your current company?

And should he be allowed to have 1on1 talks with other staff members?. He is in damage control now trying to buy everyone lunch and doing his own PR tour. Month into investig doesn't seem like much has happend yet.
