Its explicitly illegal in many states (ik in ny it is) to ask that + if u plan on kids, are you married, where your partner works, really anything about your family or anything personal unrelated to the job. Even if theres no state laws this can easily be interpreted as gender and age discrimination, many people not in HR aren’t trained in these kinds of things so it may have been a honest mistake and may have just been trying to make conversation but next time kindly remind them that some people can and will take legal action against them. May also show your proficiency in employment law.
Is that even legal lol
Well they shouldn’t be asking that so don’t answer. Ask them how it relates to the role and move on. Next question.
Sounds like their recruiters need some training on what questions to not ask.
For future, I would definitely ask why they think that’s a relevant question to ask unless it’s directly related to the role in question
Is that even legal? It’s none of their business
Its not legal
Don’t ever answer and show discomfort with question while politely asking to tie relevance to role. Whoever is interviewing needs training in best practices
Definitely a big no-no.
Run from that company
This should be illegal, even if it was an informal question smh
I think it is… in New York, anyway.
I’d like to think it’s an attempt at conversation but totally not appropriate. I’ve made the faux pas before but my intent was always just about connection and not disqualification but I also recognize it’s not ok and I’ve made a concerted effort not to engage in conversation about family unless the candidate has brought it up
I would not work for a place that asks that.
Honestly, companies these days want people who devote all their time to them and be willing to die for them.
As someone without kids I also hate it when hearing this question- it makes me think the job will be expecting people to stay until 7 PM regularly, very few other errands in life to take care…
Too late I told her yes. Then she asked me how many kids and I told her 3.
Immediately no! They should not be asking those questions.
It was for a position at a restaurant. If I don't hear from them by tomorrow at 3pm then that means I didn't get the job.
I’m guessing it’s someone who’s never been trained on what is or isn’t ok to ask in an interview. Not excusing it, of course but this is somewhat typical
That’s a big no-no
They shouldn’t be asking you it isn’t relevant to the position.
Well I didn't get the job which I already knew that was going to happen...smh...she didn't call today by 3pm.
You can always file a complaint with the EEOC for their hiring practices being discriminatory. In the long run, you've dodged a bullet and I'm sure you will find something even better.
pretty sure that question is illegal
...and that is illegal.
That is an illegal question!!!
