I have a 1:1 with a report that I absolutely dread. They often don't bring much to the meeting because their overall performance has been sub par and I've called them out about it so now rather than try to get better, have essentially shut down. How do I NOT dread this 1:1 from here on out?

Do you have anything in common that's not work? Can you start with something that's a common to build upon?

Have you gotten to know them and what's going in in their lives? When this has happened to me in the past I am surprised how often something in thier personal life is dragging on them.

A different way to approach is to ask what is challenging them at work that they are having trouble solving? So instead of a 1:1 that's one side talking it can be a troubleshooting session.

If they are just hating life and don't want to participate maybe it's time to start looking at them moving on. Maybe they need a wake up call? Or even ask about what they want to be doing? Maybe this job isn't a good fit but another one is.

For every criticism include 3 praise. Ensure to have regular 1 on 1 nevertheless - have talking points that you would discuss with everyone.

If it’s 30 minutes session I would speak 15 minutes on the direction of the company and other talking points that includes what impacts team etc
Considering this employee is closed for discussion I will spend some time praising them about things they did well.

Ask them what they are working on?
If they like to be involved in and would like to take on anything additional .
There could be subtle insights on things that they are dealing with (bad co- worker , training needs, process improvement desired)

If you get nothing in this meeting do the same approach for the next one- until they are engaged.
Wish you good luck. People Managing could be a thankless job but you got this in control/

Am I particularly uptight, or is writing meant to be done alone, without a partner talking to you? With past partners, we chat through script notes and then I go off to execute. Current partner likes to sit and chat as I write. To me, writing is crafting a conversation. So I can’t talk to you and simultaneously talk to this audience. Of course I can just say “I’m gonna go write.” But since we’re both CD level, I’m like…is this his first rodeo? Maybe other writers are different though.

Hi all! I was asked coordinate a local happy hour for my team. The issue I’m having is that I’m currently pregnant and am not sure if I’m comfortable to hang out with strangers. What’s the most professional way to say no without hurting feelings / burning bridges? Or should I suck it up and go?

So embarrassed. I literally had one job to do today which was to schedule a client and give and take her paperwork when she came in. Totally called her by the wrong name today AND gave her the wrong paperwork. She was really nice about it but I feel like my boss was disappointed and I'm disappointed in myself. I don't want her to think I won't be able to keep clients straight when I start doing supervised sessions.

Should I accept the offer or renegotiate?

You're a new manager with direct reports. One of your directs is very determined. You consider yourself a good manager so you want to help them grow. They are killing it and taking on an enormous of workload, and executing flawlessly. Do you let them continue killing it? Ask how they're doing? Or warn/advise them on how to avoid burnout?

Does anyone else just not even want to be a people manager anymore?! The amount of work this is taking, I’m just so over it. Hi. People Manager here. I've been one for 12 years now and I encourage my team to not be "yes" people. At this time, it feels like my manager wants me and my team to be yes people for her. How do I deal with this? I've never been a yes person and I don't preach this to my reports. I don't know what to do. Help?

I have a direct report who is smart, passionate about her job and can be really innovative. However she carries this enormous weight of responsibility, for needing to do everything, do it right, make sure it's perfect, not trusting colleagues to help. It creates dread and panic and overwhelming workload and a terrible attitude for her and I am speaking with her this week to start to shift her mindset. Any tips in navigating how to let go of this heavy idea of "responsibility"?

A report opened to me that they are having money problems and wants a raise. We are remote and they moved to a high CoL city. We gave an increase to help with retention 6mths ago. In my response, I helped mentor with best practices on how to ask for a raise professionally since I need to make a case to my Head on finances. But their performance has been avg and not seemingly worthy of another large raise within a short period of time. But how do I respond when they talk about personal finances?
