I have a job interview coming up. It’s for the county I live in. The probation period is 6 months! Is that crazy to anyone else? I may be stuck in my corporate mindset where you can literally work a few days and then take off as long as it’s approved.

I’ve worked in local government for almost 12 years. We have a probationary period of 1 year. That is very common for government agencies, but they usually are not strict with leave policies. You can start a job with pre planned vacations & life happens, things come up.

I have worked for the county for several years and on my third county currently. 6 months is standard. the current county I’m at is 12 months. I’ve always taken time off during my probation period, As long as you have the PTO.

It was 2 years for my position but it has some access to highly sensitive info..

No! That is actually pretty good. Some departments have probations for 1 year, depending on the position.

If it helps gauge, the federal government has one year and two year probationary periods. If you do your job and show up when you're supposed to, it's generally not an issue unless you run into a personality clash or have inappropriate behavior. In the latter two cases, not being in a probationary period isn't that big of an obstacle if an employer really wants to get rid of you.

As a former New York City civil servant it is not only common but a New York City policy via our Unions Collective Bargaining negotiations that all new first time NYC civil servants have to go through a one-year probationary period minimum!
Some as long as 2 years sometimes. So it's not uncommon, at least in New York City for first year or first time me hires.

However, I am interested in learning if like New York City civil servants, whether other City, county or state civil servants in other municipalities/states also have their yearly salaries reduced during their probationary periods, like NYC civil servants are forced to agree to in order to be hired?
NYC only pays all new first time hires 85% of their yearly salaries during their probationary periods!

For example, in my case, I was getting being deducted 15% of my yearly salary for the first two years while working with you the City Of New York. That is one year longer than my probation period was.
When I started working for the city of New York back in 2013, my initial salary was around 56 to 57,000. However, I was only paid for my first two years, somewhere around 47,500 to 46,800.
I never understood why that was the case especially that second year after my first year probationary periods had already ended!
There is only one semi-logical possibility I could ever come up with.

That City Of New York wanted to pay us less though we were doing the same exact work, so they just leveraged the Collective Bargaining with our Unions to basically save money and took advantage of that via concessions on other parts of our Union
Contacts with the City.

So, I am extremely curious and would love to hear if any other civil servants from around the country have similar contract stipulations?

Nick G. From New York City

working for NYS is a 1 year probationary period!

That does not mean one cannot, it will be leave without pay. One is not precluded the use of sick leave, either. I did a short stint local government (county)/judiciary (county circuit court).

We have a 12 month probationary period.

Maybe don't go on the interview. Government is different then corporate employment.
