I have been in public accounting for almost 10 years with a combination of audit and consulting. Recently looking for an exit. My ideal career goal is to be a CFO of a mid to small size company. However, based on my recent job search, it is even hard to land on a controller role because I don’t have any industry experience. Is anyone in the same boat , or has been there? Wondering if you take a step back in both experience and pay.

Keep looking. As a SM theres no reason you cant land a controller position in a small-medium size company

Is it easier to start with a larger company with a role like accounting/finance manager ?

You don’t need industry even if the job description says so. I would leverage on the advantage of being in public that you get to work with and see how things are ran in different industries from a larger scope. Give examples of projects you have been one while working with client X, and how it relates to their specific industry on how you could be a value added prospect. Best of luck!

You don’t need industry although industry is preferred. Just mention in your initial interview that you were industry specific ext at the Public accounting firm, and worked for midsize companies doing ect.

I feel you. It's been hard. From my experience, some of the more open-minded smaller companies are willing to give someone from PA a chance to be a controller. However, the pay and benefits at those companies are not great.

I have lost almost all my interviews and the reason was they hired someone who had both PA and industrt experience. I stsrt losing confidence, tbh. But I need to keep applying.

Hang in there! You are getting interviews which means you stand a chance. Maybe like what GT1 said, try to leverage on your client experience a little bit more during the interview?

I'm kind of in the mindset of only doing FDD at big 4, otherwise I'll go straight to industry. Am I being too down on mid-market FDD experience and the related exit ops?

Also, I can't go the route of doing FDD at a different big 4. Already got rejected by all of them cause I'm not in audit (but have CPA).

Any one make a move from fund admin after big 4 assurance and then was able to make a pivot to a PE fund accounting team? I am considering moving to a fund admin now. Have 9+ years of big four experience. Worried that I can get stuck in fund admin. But I have interviewed at several big name pe shops and make a few rounds on interviews but then get the same feedback that they are worried about my lack of operational experience.

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the most, how pissed would you be if you were a supervisor and you had a new direct report on your team with a higher salary than you? The years of experience are the same, but you have 3 designations (they have 0), you have 3 licenses (they have just 2), they have little to no experience with technical complex claims (you have hundreds), and you have 3 years in management (they have 0).

UPDATE (RE: SoCal Assistant Controller Interview)

So after two weeks of waiting (and giving up on the idea of getting the job really), the recruiter got back to me.

They said due to month-end and quarter-end close they were busy and couldn’t get back to me as quickly for a “good update”.

The recruiter said the CFO enjoyed our call, she, the CFO, will call me next week directly to “discuss some final things”.

Not sure if Im hired or not, but are there any questions about the job, comp (cont.)

What’s going on FB friends,

I am contemplating a move to industry working at a VC, Tax Director role east coast. Looks like it will be primarily overseeing compliance with some aspect of advising on structures etc. There is another tax reporting head above me.

The potential comp is the low 200k with a 10% bonus (still higher than what I am making). I feel this is pretty low for VC standards but maybe my standards are also too high. I have generally seen 25% bonus with carry.

Any thoughts?
