I’m curious what vc fund would even talk to a second year cap markets associate after the slowest year for cap markets in over a decade
JA it doesn’t hurt to take the interview and see if they’re clowns or not, it will be good practice for later interviews if nothing wlse
Too early. Get at least 4 years of firm training.
Too early even in a boom year - haven’t really seen / led enough. Wait until at least mid
Depends on practice group but generally 4th-6th. If you’re specialist maybe as early as 3rd.
all of the above comments on getting more experience, plus VC firms are not all created equal. returns vary widely between managers (and fund vintages) so would select carefully before going to one. carry can be meaningful portion of comp if you choose wisely.
Definitely too soon - I’m an ECVC 5th year and I still know that if I left now there’s a good amount I’d still be relying on outside counsel for (like I definitely know enough but also recognize that I’m not an expert yet)
A lot of people think 5th is fine or even late to go but honestly I feel like I constantly give advice to senior in-house people who do not know so much and I’m just like man how could you leave and not know all this stuff … I know people just wing it but man I really want to know what I’m doing and how to manage counsel if I ever left
All great responses. Thanks so much. I'd probably take this gig if given an offer for several other personal reasons that I don't want to disclose for anonymity, but with "associate vs in house as a second year" in a vacuum, I agree with you guys.
