It took me about 10 years to pay off my student debt but it is worth it in the end. I do love my job. I love working with animals. Yes sometimes it is stressful and stuff but in the end, I do love doing what I went to school for. Hang in there there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You've got this!
I can't imagine going into debt that much! That's why I've just decided to be happy with my job. I'll never make what the vets do, but I still get to work with the animals and have a decent life. So, I'm happy with where I'm at.
Oh, I'm right in the thick of it. Broke as can be and questioning all of my life choices. Ha! All joking aside, I've always wanted to do this and feel fulfilled every day, making the sacrifices worth it to me. Have you tried thinking about it that way?
I know it's so rough to have to look at all that debt and realize you can't take back your decision to go to school. I am very hopeful for some student debt relief in the coming years, but until then, I'm just going to keep paying my minimums and waiting until federal loan forgiveness one day
I have debt but also I am comfortable in my life since I’ve never gotten paid this much. You can pay your debt back based on your income. I walk around childrens toy sections and see that a veterinarian is part of the dream careers children have along with astronaut, firefighter, etc. I love educating clients on how to connect with their pet more in terms of reading painful behavior. If you truly love the vet field, I don’t think you should regret it all.
I deal with the $350k debt by pretending it doesn't exist. Before covid, I paid income based and put it on autopay. I will do the same after covid. I'm banking on forgiveness or economic collapse before my 30 years are up. (Not a recommended strategy FYI).
18 years in with around150k starting debt balance still owe 50k. Do I regret going to vet school - no. Would I do it again - no. Financially a horrible decision. Unless you get a better deal on your education most vet schools are overpriced. The kicker for me is your alma mater will track you down wherever you go to ask for you to donate to their program for the rest of your life - at least mine does.
How much are you making? Maybe you should start applying to positions where you can make more money so you will feel more comfortable paying off debt
