Edit: 1) married. 2) kids. 3) just never know when you'll need that private insurance because your options may be limited by VA. Also emergencies. You need dental insurance anyways.

I have both. That way whatever’s left or the VA doesn’t cover, my other insurance usually picks up.

Definitely recommend getting both. Always good to have that double/gap coverage, just in case.
Yes, especially if you have a service connected disability and routinely use the VA for care, you should absolutely get private insurance, because every visit to the VA reduces your deductible for private insurance

The VA bills my insurance and the VA doesn't make me pay for copays. I've had 3 outpatient procedures at the VA and cost me nothing out of pocket.
I have both as well just in case I need a second opinion or feel like I’m not getting good care. I just got the cheapest option HDHP.
