I made a calculation mistake in my cost analysis in my Deloitte partner case interview for new grad 2023 position. Another thing that bothers me was when they asked my approach I gave a pretty detailed answer and one of the interviewers was satisfied but the second didn’t get it and asked me to explain it thrice and some to and fro talk was there. Rest of it was pretty good and I nailed the implementation part and behavioural for sure. Do you guys think I still have a chance? Deloitte Canada

Hiring standards go up and down based on need for people and available labor pool.

Nothing here seems like it would be disqualifying unless the mistakes were significant (ie approach was wrong).

Probing questions are normal and should be expected. It’s very possible they understood but wanted to test the depth of your response/ how well you actually understood it.

Don’t confuse it being clear to you with it being clear to your audience. Communication skills are tested for exactly this reason.

As someone who has been part of undergraduate campus recruiting in the US, I can guarantee that as long as you are able to explain your process and the process was mostly correct then they won’t necessarily care that you got the wrong answer. Interviews are stressful and sometimes people get their math jumbled due to stress. Not a big deal, and the interviewers know this.

like

I would doubt that they bin you for a calculation error. I am US based but I only ever focus on the approach.

But that said, I feel like hiring is slowing down and they may have a higher threshold than they had even a few months ago.

I got trashed for a calculation error in one of my interviews with MBB. Don’t think D is that anal though. As long as you are able to formulate an approach and explain your thought process you should be fine.
The interviewer giving you the back and forth is probably new to interviewing and is trying to make an impact in front of more experienced peers or superiors.
