I received an offer from a big law firm with a deadline of early October and guaranteed bonus subject to an 18 month clawback (no step downs). I am a senior associate (8th year). 2,000 annual billable requirement. Any suggestions for negotiations?

Anyone ever seen DLA accept tiered?

I think you probably need to be more specific. What do you view as gaps relative to your expectations? There is a lot that can be negotiated depending on your skill set, leverage, the firm you are going to (lockstep or not), etc. As an 8th year you are at or near first review for partnership. Has that been discussed to the extent that is a goal?

like

Also, if you are not comfortable with your compensation or the year, they are bringing you in, I have found most firms have flexibility when it comes to that as an associate. But again, if you were stepping into a new field or not coming with the requisite experience to be on an earlier partner track, you may not have very much leverage. I also agree that 2000 hours seems on the high side, but I have found that the base, and whether or not it is reasonable is often judged in the context of what the bonuses look like for exceeding your hours and how rich they are at different levels.

You're really outing yourself here...

How long a look to partner? What’s your goal?

like

1-2 year look to partnership at its quickest (assuming a rockstar).goal is to have a relatively better work environment, I like the field more too. I don’t necessarily want partnership asap but want possibility in the future]

At DLA bonuses are tiered with enhanced bonus for associates that exceed 2,000 hours at every 100 hour mark up to 2,700 hours. Historically they’ve offered bonus enhancements for higher performance ratings and production as well. If I remember correctly, their base market bonus for an 8th year is $115,000.

If you’re asking about negotiating a reduced hours expectation for a reduced salary and reduced bonus goal, I do not believe they entertain that type of option for associates at DLA.

In a similar demonstration of rigidity, they recently announced their 4 day in-office attendance policy for their corporate group.

When would Nokia credit salary this month😁?

Why do firms fire people with low but still profitable hours? I am in my first full year on track for pretty low hours (~1500) but the actual realized fees (after writedowns) are still double my yearly salary. Is it because firms know they could replace someone like me with an equivalent attorney who would bill more?
