I recently joined a new firm as a Tax Manager. As expected, there are areas I did a lot of at my prior firm that are less central here, and other technical areas that are more core to this role that I am actively ramping up on. I have been spending time outside of work studying and reviewing examples to close gaps quickly. For those who made a similar move, what helped you be most effective early on and build credibility while ramping up?

Find a tax partner that is willing to mentor you and be open about your strengths and improvement areas. Early on I would be more hands on in certain areas rather than pushing down (if budget/schedules allowed for it) while I got up to speed. Good luck. They say it takes about a year to really feel comfortable in a new job or role so give it time

Agreed! In the same boat before, but I got very little support unfortunately. Ramped up quickly after putting in a lot of effort

What technical areas are core to the role ? You’re being too vague to provide any help

Looking for recommendations on a good book/resource on how to manage people, especially when you’re managing teams to achieve tight deadlines and also overall leadership for those teams. Currently on a project with tight regulatory deadlines and feel like I’m struggling to push people without pissing them off. Great learning curve for me and a good read seems timely. TIA!

I wouldn’t drink this with a cigar, because you wouldn’t notice it, but it’s insane how much that finish lingers and mimics the mouth tingle after smoking a cigar.

it feels like every survey about working from home is (poorly) designed to answer the useless question "would you rather work from home or from the office." I submit that the set of people who prefers to have only one of those two options, always and forever, is the null set. which means it DOES NOT MATTER because the correct answer is always going to be "make both possible." you're welcome, HR departments everywhere.

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?

I interviewed for KPMG on 11/15 for a Senior role and the HR emailed me on 11/16 that everyone liked me but they think I should be hired as an Experienced Associate. I had a call with the HR on 11/17 wherein we discussed about my salary expectations and the HR said he will get back in a day. It’s been more than 10 days and multiple follow ups but still no response. I don’t think I was rude while talking to the HR, I just told my current salary and asked for min. that no. Did i miss the chance ?
