I recently started with a new firm. Since starting I constantly hear the attorneys talk bad about support staff for small mistakes that have been made in the past/present. No one is perfect and this makes me somewhat regret my decision of switching firms. The grass isn’t always greener.

Unfortunately toxic work culture is endemic in the legal world. If your current firm doesn’t work, you move on to the next one. You find one that you can live it and try not to dwell on little annoyances. Avoid getting involved in other people’s business. Just use what you hear to learn from it, do your best.

I've been a litigation paralegal for nearly 30 years and just found a firm with an amazing culture a mere 3 months ago. Toxicity is sadly far too common in law firms.

I have been in this industry for 20 years I haven’t been able to find a firm that is a good fit. Within the last 5 years it has taken a toll on my mental health

It sucks. I’m strongly considering leaving the law firm culture - maybe going in-house. Ive been at my firm for 4 months and have just witnessed the grossest display of a senior paralegal get dragged through the mud daily by a narcissistic boss, only to end up terminating him. It was so obvious they had it in for him - everyone saw it. What I’m saying is - I don’t know that it’s much better somewhere else.
I was more disgusted that NO ONE said anything on his behalf to upper management.

It is extremely hard to find a good firm with a good environment. Learn as much as you can from this place and start looking for a job (when you still have a job). You will find your happy place. I did, but took years. I have been doing this gig for many many years now!

It’s not and trust me if they did it them they will do it to you

Im sorry. This is far too common. Attorneys have superiority complex whether they realize it or not. This is what made me not want to pursue.

Need advice - I've been talking to a Partner contact at a big-4 firm where I REALLY want to work. She sent my info to the managing partner in my city, but I haven't heard anything for about 3 weeks. Been playing it cool because I know these things can take time, BUT, I just got let go from my current firm. I have til 12/15 to find a new job.

Do I tell her my timeline is now a month, or is telling them I'm getting fired going to tank my chances of getting the job?

How do I get them to give me a budget to work from?

When do you think associates are usually let go in small practice groups that are currently being overwhelmed with work? Is it when it starts to slows down or when they already have a candidate to replace you? Just trying to figure out how long I have after annoying a partner 😂.

Name the most ridiculous micro-managing by partners that you experience.

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…

I started working for a new law firm, much larger than the firm I was working for previously. The main attorney that I work under had noticed some mistakes I was making (I am a NY paralegal who took this position with the understanding that they’d be teaching me NJ and NYC real estate). Anyways, the attorney decided to tell the HR manager about the mistakes I had been making. Rather than HR discussing with me, the manager told my dramatic coworker to tell me..how should I handle this? Very hurt!

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

My boss (atty) is so disorganized! I’ve been with him 6 months and he’s having a hard time delegating, sharing info and managing deadlines. I’ve organized the caseload to manage the deadlines. He says he wants me to help with discovery but when I offer to start on one, he says he needs to do it. (Since he might have to present as evidence) When I give him deadlines and ask for the docs he says he’ll get to it. It’s a small 1 man firm, and I’m the first assistant besides his wife. Any advice?
