I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

Get out immediately
I’d wait until you finish the cpa but then get out right after that. Get the cpa bonus and update your resume. It’s not going to hurt your chances of getting on the whole audit if you wait 6 months. At the AC you will likely have more steady hours in order to study for the cpa that you’d be less likely to have in actual audit.
With the volume of people leaving audit, you should have a case to get out of the COE and onto the real deal. Just keep applying.
I would also do a good job and see if there are internal client-facing positions you can transfer to. Form relationships with the teams you are working with
I would leave if you want a role that will stretch, grow, and challenge you as a professional. A role that will help you get to where you want to be in the long term.
Look on workday for internal transfer opportunities. Pay close attention to job descriptions.
I would try and get out. But even if you are on the main audit team, you will probably only see specific parts of the audit because it doesn't make sense to get everyone on the team involved in every single area of the audit, and you will do the admin busy work that cannot easily be outsourced. If you are on small private clients you will see more areas than if you're on a big public client.
Thank you all for your advice, I’ll start applying to different accounting firms right away and get these last two sections of the Cpa exam completed as soon as possible!
Stick around and pass your CPA exam…you will have same exit ops like core team. WLB and team culture is excellent in AC. You will be working 40 hrs per week. Internal PwC policy is you can apply to advisory AC after 6 months and to Core team in 12 months. You will learn more digital skills and will be better than Core team on those. 2023 it will be all integrated. IMO it is better than working at outside Big4. PwC AC Vs Bdo, RSM, GT etc. definitely PwC AC
For those who work as a part of the main audit engagement team at PWC, is possible to get transferred into the main as soon as possible or is it as impossible as I’ve read online?
I’ve seen it happen. Just build a good relationship with the audit teams you work with and let them and your superiors know what you want after you pass the exams. I don’t see why PwC wouldn’t be supportive of it.
