I always have a number in my mind before I even go into negotiation. A minimum I'm willing to accept. That way, even if they are pressuring me, I know definitively if I'm going to take it or not. Anything above that number? Groovy. Less than that number? I'm out the door.
Don't regret it too much. I have heard a few stories recently of job offers being rescinded because candidates tried to negotiate. There are too many unemployed people willing to take what they are offered, and companies know it. This isn't the job market to be pushing for a higher salary.
I think you'll be able to use performance reviews for a chance to negotiate a raise (probably after the 1 year mark). But before accepting your next offer, I think it's definitely smart to always pause before accepting an offer. Even if the offer seems really good, you should still say, thank you so much, can I have 48 hours to review this offer and get back to you? I think having a default pause will help you to always figure out your negotiation strategy relative to the offer
This is me in my current role. I didn’t take my interview seriously and was surprised that I ended up getting the job. If I had known, I would have negotiated better from the beginning but I plan to renegotiate after a year since I’m happier and wanted to leave my former job. For next time, do your market research and have a figure. All the best.
