I started a job this past week and I haven’t had a lot of work at all! My position is new to the team too. Not much training has been going on, and they don’t seem to have a formal on boarding. I’m assuming this is normal? I’m not getting busy work so I guess that’s good, and I’m not being overworked. I’ve asked my supervisor if she needed help with anything on day 2 but i don’t want to continue to ask this question everyday.

Any advice ?

it's called the ketchup theory: slow at first then all of a sudden it's a big rush that you can't contain

likesmart

I've had jobs, and known people who've had jobs, across all departments, where the first few weeks to few months is slow.

Very normal.

Take the time to familiarize yourself with the brand, the work, the server... And continue to ask if you can help. Your boss knows you're slow, but wouldn't have hired you if they didn't need you.

like

Thank you! Appreciate it!

Idea: Ask your supervisor or other seniors if you can be added to meetings/zoom calls that don’t necessarily require you or are above your level , just so that you can “ listen and learn”. Essentially sit in back row quietly and listen. This would help you start learning big picture and dynamics and likely lead to actual work for you post meeting. You could then talk w/your supervisor post meetings with any questions etc. Essentially learn by listening and watching.

like

Yes I’m on tons of meetings, thanks!

like

Hey!! I was like that when I started too. I felt so lost like I had no training and no work to do. Keep reaching out to team members occasionally to check in and see if they need anything. Ask a lot of questions when they show you anything and show genuine interest. You should also set up weekly 1:1 meetings with your team members. I have a weekly 1:1 with my Account Director and a weekly 1:1 with the Senior AE. When I was new I would use that time to build rapport, see what they’re working on, and let them know I had bandwidth if they need help.

like

Thank you!! My AE is great and we had a 1:1 a couple days ago. We have some scheduled 1:1 weekly as well. Great advice!

It mostly just takes time and effort when you’re new. The team is probably going to have to make adjustments themselves with giving you work and what work you can do. If they’re busy, they might not have as much time for you right now. It takes time to build trust where you can do things yourself and they trust you. Hang in there!!

like

First week (arguably first month) is always strange, but lack of onboarding/training doesn’t help. You’ll be fine. Just keep asking if people need help and try to be a sponge to digest as much as you can in the meantime. I’ve been in the industry for 6 years and recently started a new job and I hate how I’m doing nothing right now, but I keep reminding myself that it’s par for the course sometimes, especially if you’re joining the team during a busy/hectic time. The fact that you even posted this thread shows that you genuinely care, so I’m sure that you’ll do great once you’re actually settled in.

like

Thanks so much! Good luck in your new role!!

My first job was like that too, first 3 days nothing. Then BAM 80 hour work week hahaha.

like

Definitely normal to be slow especially in the first week. Even in an associate level position, my first week at a new company was extremely slow. I remember my supervisor letting me know I could leave at 4 after having orientation the entire morning 😂

Keep asking your boss if she needs help, and if you’re still slow, then take the time to learn more about the clients you’re working with/what work your team has done in the past. That way when things finally get busy (and trust me they will) you’ll have additional knowledge regarding what you’re working on!

like

Good to know this is normal ! Thanks for the advice.

like

Use this time to learn as much as you can about your clients. Look through current and past plans, results reports, strategy docs, etc. Read through their websites. Review their social media channels. Look into who is talking about them and how. Comb through their annual reports and press coverage. And do the same for their key competitors. Once the work picks up this foundational knowledge will be invaluable. Congrats on the new role!

I have never done freelance work and was given the opportunity to take part in a cool project. My problem is it’s a proactive case by a brand new agency and it’s their own project, meaning there’s no client who pays for the work. For them it’s PR for their new business, but I think they’re expecting me to work completely pro bono. It does have potential for a great case and I’d love to have it in my portfolio, but is it reasonable for them not to compensate me? Any tips on how to approach this?
