I think EY has the best overall culture at the big 4. I am really surprised how nice the people are here. Thoughts?EY PwC KPMG Deloitte

Office and team play a huge role. It varies so much. My current team is worlds different than one I was on before. Also from what I’ve seen here I would say EY has the lowest morale of the big 4. Or you all complain the most.

Ey11: you are spot on!!! What kills me is that they lack the tax technical but front do much like they know it. Like no Deloitte is a consulting firm that is just trying to do tax. PwC and EY are the big players in the US tax market.

EY nice = Southern Nice aka Fake nice

Well, aren’t you just a peach.

I’ve found people to be very nice but lacking the ability to effectively manage or give feedback. No one is upfront with constructive criticism, no one pushes back on unreasonable deadlines (when there is flexibility), or solves people problems (a SM told me his way of dealing with it was to ignore it - and we’ve lost people from the group because of it).

like

EY10, it sounds like the staff was already on the deal and maybe there were ring fencing issues that made easily passing off the work difficult.

Depend what you consider as ‘best overall’. Personally I would’ve preferred Deloitte cutthroat culture. At EY, everyone is nice (for the most part) and give vague positive feedback regardless of performance. As a high performer, I get very frustrated that everyone gets the same recognition and the only difference is I get more work. Low performer can get by for many many years before they get counseled out.

You mean overstated?

It really just depends on the group and your specific team. I worked at three out of the four firms and it’s very subjective.

like

KPMG 1: that’s true as well.

EY’s culture is pretty good indeed, but I hate that mediocre people just thrive sometimes. Then again, maybe I am one of those mediocre ones cause I can’t imagine working like crazy in another firm 😂

Lol

Depends on the office and group, EY FSO is a league of its own.

like

Good point, I guess I just see that very often on corporate clients that acquire partnerships.

Everyone I know at EY hates it but probably my city and group area. But they throw the unlimited vacation over me at the greatest perk. I assume you agree that it is awesome?

I have brought this up to leadership, they know. I think this is partly the reason why we had the “ey candid” discussion. But I honestly don’t know how much value the feedback in the forms has, I feel like decisions are being made exclusively on: do we as a group like working with this person? And I think that’s ok.

Deloitte is pretty bad.. atleast my experience has been

Yes I am in Deloitte tax 😞. Just waiting to gather courage and run like never before from here and never ever come back.

I like most of the people in my group. In fact, that’s one of the main reasons I stay at Deloitte. I started interviewing with EY a few years ago but found the people I spoke with to be fake nice/sexist, so decided to stop that process. Glad OP is happy where they are.

D6: that’s why you are the exception my friend. That is definitely not the norm culture in Deloitte. I knew some great people at the Houston office in DT. But the firm overall lacks leadership, stability and the overall culture is bad.

Having worked at both EY and PwC for 15 and 8 years respect, I’d have to agree. While every places has its ups and downs, EY was more diverse and respectful. While I’ve some wonderful colleagues at PwC, I’ve never encountered such a toxic environment where abusive behavior is tolerated as long as the bottom line is satisfied. Lack of diversity and any accountability for mistreatment or bad behavior. Lots of talk but no walk. Can’t comment on DT or KPMG as I haven’t worked there.

Pwc5: I worked at Deloitte and PwC and I agree. No place is perfect, but I would gladly take EY’s culture over Deloitte and PwC. Deloitte is absolutely cutthroat and while PwC is the gold standard, the culture is pretty savage their too. I wish you the best at PwC. At least their technology is better than EY

Am I understanding utilization rate correctly? It’s chargeable time over total time? Charged 40 hours and had 10 hours non-charge so my utilization is 80%? If so, wouldn’t it benefit me to understate non-charge hours so my utilization is higher since they only really care about chargeable time anyways? Charge 40 hours still but only put 5 hours non-charge for utilization to be 89% instead of 80%? Or am I misunderstanding how utilization works?

Compliance question here, I have always thought of the SALT deduction on the fed return as a perm item & have treated as such in such sch M-3. I see that some people put it as a temp on sch M-3. What is the justification for treating it as a temp on the M-3. You don’t set up a deferred on the def RF for the state tax deduct & it is also a rate impacting item (I know that some temps can be rate impacting). But this all leaves me to side with perm. Does anyone know the logic behind temp treatment?

Intl Tax folks, how long did it take before you were confident in your role? Then I'll have calls where partners discuss complex tax, legal, treasury and other related concepts that all go over my head.. it becomes overwhelming
