I tried to counter the first offer I was given and was told there wasn’t any room for negotiation. I was happy with the offer as it was and accepted. After a few months and a little digging, I found out that I am the highest paid member of my team. Is it common for a hiring manager to truly make the best offer up front?

No, I don't think that's common, generally speaking they endeavor to save money if they can. In your case there could have been some factor that played in your favor. Sometimes when you come aboard can make a difference, the company may have been prepared to make a good offer as they needed someone right away and didn't want to spend time negotiating.

I have had this happen to me. At a decent company, they will pay you what they can for that role. When I joined this firm, they paid me almost 10% over the comp ceiling for the role.

like

That’s awesome!

It does happen. I wouldn't say it's common, but if you're desirable enough, they will do everything in their power to get you to sign. Sounds like you fit the bill - nice work!

Hey, that works too. Good for you!!

Doubt it they just want you to settle

I have been approached by 3 separate HR people at a startup company to interview for a position. I already have a fulltime job that pays well and I only started 6 months ago too. Anyways, the pay was intriguing and the job was a high level scientific advisor so I did interviews. At the last interview, at the end I was told the job was for management but I prepared for a different kind of interview. I am waiting for an offer or rejection letter. I feel peeved that they wasted my time. Red flags?

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?

I’ve been verbally offered a position at a new company, but the recruiter insists on getting a verbal acceptance before sending the offer in writing. This person insists on negotiating salary before sending the paperwork. Generic benefits, RSUs, bonus info have been provided; it’s all unofficial.

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

Im currently going through industry change.
Im a pastry cook with 4yrs experience and the average salary start for this position is now at $22/hr here in vegas, especially in the strip. But cooking/baking is not my passion. So im changing into veterinary medicine and im seeing that the starting rate for a vet tech is around $16-18. Why is that?? Why are people in the vet med industry being paid so low?? Something needs to change. Labor of love aint enough for the people in this job.
