Consulting might still be a decent choice. AI may disrupt worker bees but once you're senior enough to focus on sales, relationship management will be hard to disrupt with AI.
I think you and I are on the same page. The tech isn't there now, but is getting better over time, and is shaping up to serve as a support tool rather than replacement for surgeons.
Go become an IC at an AI native company
OP, What do you mean by "real agency?" If you want "real agency," buy a small business and build it up.
Agree with C2, that ChatGPT really isn't at the point of being able to replace strategy and transformation consultants. It's not like we just say, "You should cut costs, build better customer experiences, and push your teams to do more with less." We might recommend things along those lines, but our value comes from helping orgs actually understand that they need to act now and then helping them get it done in a way that makes them look good.
Invest as much as you can in tech focused index funds. Try to live off the appreciation as companies grow their share price and axe headcount.
AI ain’t taking my real estate
Anything related to unavoidably labor-intensive work or physical infrastructure seem to have a decent chance. PE-backed HVAC and service industry roll-ups, for example.
Carpentry? Plumbing? There's no place that won't be disrupted or isn't already disrupted - correct me if I am wrong..
Go to a Big4 or IT Major. I help MDs in business development pipelines and we made almost 4x revenues from last FY in strategic consulting only. What’s changing is the way consulting teams are structured and deliver value. Now it looks more like a M&A integration project
