Water with lime. Everyone thinks you're drinking anyways.
Recovering alcoholic here. I'm so happy that I get to be sober and work in advertising. I have other coping mechanisms to deal with stress. And I think I have less stress because I don't have to worry about the dumb, drunk shit I did at happy hour the previous night.
start working at saatchi, no drinking and no personality.
I stopped years ago. I do seltzer and cran. no one will notice. if they do I just say "I have a long one today". it's much easier to say than the morning after"I'm sorry about last night"
Trying to do this myself. I am trying to cut it out Sunday - Thursday. Friday and Saturday I indulge. It is actually amazing how much better I feel in a weeks time of doing this. Good luck to you.
AA is a really productive and open community that would be happy to welcome you in with no stigmas or judgment.
There's no shame in working to become a better you.
Why make excuses? Just say you don't want to drink. I've said this many times and people don't bat an eye. No need to lie about it.
You don't need to drink. Whether you feel pressured to because your co-workers do is your own issue, but don't excuse your choice because of the industry we work in. You also have the ability to drink anything else: soda, coffee, water, juice. You are an adult; perception over your choice of beverage should not affect what you do.
I think every industry claims it is difficult when it comes to drinking. Construction, hospitality... Get help if you want to quit but if you're trying to moderate and fail then maybe there's a larger issue than surroundings.
One more point around "what other people think"....in the beginning it was harder. I have found that with not drinking and a desire to eat healthy, can make people uncomfortable bc other people often want a "partner in crime". I have learned that when someone says "arent you going to have xyz...?" This requires a soft response to make it go away. If i say "no", I get a million questions...are you on a diet? In recovery? Blah, blah....If I say "maybe later" or "not right now" people tend to let it go. They may ask again, but its usually later in the night and a no becomes easier (hey, we have to get up early). It does get easier over time and as others have suggested, if more help is needed, there are a ton of beautiful services and people who are eager to help. You'd be shocked how many of us are excelling in recovery. Hope that helps.
Your decision has to be for you, and you alone. In my experience, AA helped me become a person worthy of that decision.
Agree with seltzer and lime as per above. Or I mention I'm on medication and can't mix. Or have blood work in the morning. Or I'm working out in the morning. I've never encountered someone who implored further. I drink, I just don't want to drink at every outing.
I did it. Few people really care. It's all your mindset.
Also second the water or soda water with lime. I grab a soda water as soon as possible at parties so I have a drink in my hand and don't have enough time to think about getting an alcoholic drink. If anyone asks I just say im not drinking today. Most of my friends and close coworkers know I'm in recovery and they don't care at all. We still party hard when the time comes. Except I get to wake up the next day without a hangover.
I don't drink at all but I still love going to all the events and happy hours. I tend to have a water in my hands most of the time. If someone I know asks I'll tell them I don't drink, they normally ask follow up questions or leave it. If it's someone I don't know, or that doesn't know I don't drink and I don't want to get into it, they'll ask if I want a drink and I simply say I'm ok for now. @Possible 1 congrats on your recovery!
Own it! You are strong enough. If people give you shit they have their own issues to deal with. I quit (not 100%, I have a few drinks a quarter) but it is powerful to not be buzzed then hungover. You are in good company. Good luck!!
