I agree with Director 1. As a person who is in a hiring position w/in planning, I care more about real experience than school experience (sorry!)
Also personality plays so much into the role, to sell-in strategies and creative ideas internally and to clients, in addition to collaborating well with others. Also, the ability to simplify. I've met ppl in advertising with masters, and they unnecessarily complicate/overthink things when our job as planners is to simplify.
Why do you have an MBA? How much experience do you have? Tell me about a time your strategic expertise made a lot of $$ for a client.
The MBA has no impact on your salary but you're seriously underpaid so ask for more or get a new job.
yeah you are totally underpaid.
Spend the next year focused on building your arsenal of planning successes and stories, getting your decks blown up and getting better for it. Practice speaking and think a lot about your personal brand as this is huge for planners. Volunteer for as many projects, pitches and Cannes things as you can to touch more types of businesses. Then consider bringing out the data of what planners make (glassdoor is a good start) and presenting it to your current employer or jumping ship and doubling your salary.
Update: Had a long do-or-die convo with my boss and the CSO. They verbally committed to the promotion and money by the end of the year, but I'm still staying on them to get something in writing and keeping a pulse on other openings in case they flake. Really appreciate everyone's advice :)
Thank you both for the candid advice. :) I've been at the agency 3 years and in this role about 6 months - started here in acct mgmt after spending about two years client-side.
Got my MBA because, in a nutshell, I wanted to be a professional storyteller and this was the best way to quickly hone those skills. I definitely hear you on the overthinking/complicating - I see it all the time and make it a point to avoid that because it just makes our clients mad, lol. I also hate the perception that planning and account/creative can't always get along so I probably spend more time jamming with them than at my own desk.
I recently defended a $50K proactive idea that ended up getting a small client almost twice the return. I have been given more responsibility as a result, but don't think my compensation is tracking with that. I know a big part of it was because I came in low and didn't negotiate then, which is my own fault, but I feel that I'm behind on the curve and may not ever catch up despite my performance - unless I leave, which I really don't want to do.
Totally understand that school experience can never match real experience. Just want to make sure I'm putting everything on the table when I do make my case. (Unless it will hurt more than help!)
How many years experience? That's very low if you have more than 2 yrs work
You’re underpaid for sure. Your intro years in acc is pulling you down. Your current employer can’t see your value to your clients and therefore them. You must leave. There’s no way you’re going to make a 20-40% increase in that environment. I would not put too much into that MBA, unless it’s Ivy. Go show your new employer why you’re worth what you command. Good luck!

What school mba and what is your current salary
DePaul. Currently at $50K
3 years at this agency, 5 total (interned/worked while I was in grad school)
^ that's the biggest reason I don't wanna jump ship. I don't think my time in acct mgmt will matter much because I was so junior. Want to exhaust all options before finding another job. But I feel better knowing I'm not crazy to ask for more money ^_^
You should quit. 75 minimum
Yep, MBA aside (it’s not going to impact your salary, sadly), you’re probably $15-$20k underpaid. But you may want to consider giving yourself a little more time in the role before you look. You’ve technically been a strategist for 6 mos.
