Rule of thumb is to never use pie charts
Basically humans are really poor with distinguishing volume. Any pie chart will almost always need a numerical label to be useful. A Bart chart displays the information precisely in a visual format.
Round charts in general (pie and doughnut) are not intuitive to read. On a bar chart, even without the labels, you can usually see which column is bigger and it's easy to compare as they're side by side. That's not the case on a round chart.
If you do have to use a round chart, I agree with the other comments and advice within the thread. An alternative is to also use a doughnut chart. In my opinion it looks better than pie charts.
