Noooo. You left. A client went away, a lot of crazy stuff happened. They'll know of course--almost nobody just leaves a job. But you dont have to say "I was laid off." Personally I look at it as the agency's fault. Either they messed up their money, or they lost a client, or they just treated you like they didnt care about you. So dont feel bad. You left.
What they said ^^
If you’re good at what you do and didn’t get fired for something stupid or illegal, then spin it as a layoff due to a client (not yours) loss or something. If they really like you and believe in what you do, you’ll be fine.
And if it doesn’t work out, what are they going to do? Send you to Advertising jail?
Don’t worry about it.
Don’t lie, but don’t complain about your previous job either. “they didn’t have this or that” sounds like you were the issue in the end. Stuff like “It wasn’t what I expected” or “it wasn’t the right fit” are understandable and people likely won’t ask for more details after that, these things happen.
What I said was “we lost some business and they did some restructuring” then I always compliment the last company by saying something like “it was bittersweet bc I loved the work and my coworkers.... but I’m looking forward to new experiences/work/clients to expand my portfolio.” It’s broad enough with a positive twist where you don’t say if you were laid off or fired and you don’t sound bitter and you seem like a good team player.
I would tell them the previous job had no process and you weren’t given direction or proper training on tasks that were assigned to you. Let them know you’re a person who is all about process. Agencies love to hear that shit
Be direct, assertive, and specific, and quick about it. Trust me. I’ve interviewed hundreds of people.
My vote is go with honesty/transparency. Start the next role off with a clean slate. You have nothing to apologize for- just reflect on what you can learn or have learned from the experience & will use to help you be successful in the next role. That’s what I’d want from someone I was interviewing for a piece of biz I manage.
Stop. Do not mention this. Happened to me. I was laid off during final salary and perks negotiations for a new job. I told them. They paused the process. Weeks later I was informed they went with another candidate. Why give them doubt at this point in your career? Get the job then tell them.
Haha advertising jail. A legit fear of mine
I maybe wouldn’t blame the agency training. I know it’s a massive pain point and I’m 100% sure you weren’t trained but my recruiter friends have told me it’s a massive red flag. Focus on process, as other posters have said - you’re looking for a place where you can affect real change, especially via proper processes.
you do not need to disclose why you left your last job and your former employer can only legally confirm dates of employment NOT why you left. you should not tell them, they will be skeptical to hire you and you’ll start out on a bad foot. they wouldn’t tell you why someone quit or how bad a situation you’re about to walk into is!
Was it because of money or performance. If they ask why don’t lie (and they will ask why). Think about if you were interviewing new candidates, wouldn’t you want to know the truth of why someone is looking for a new role.
Performance. I was hired to do one job but then I kind of got the bait and switch and they never trained me nor really provided help. I guess it was sink or swim and I sunk!
Thank you all for the advice. Do I have to tell them before they ask or should I wait until they ask why I’m leaving? Won’t they check up to see if I still work at my former agency?
Thank you all for your advice! I appreciate it. I was feeling a bit of fear even though I shouldn’t feel it (not my fault if I wasn’t set up for success) and your words have calmed my nerves
Bittersweet. Love it.
Could we say we were unfulfilled by the kind of work the previous agency was doing?
Even if you don’t tell them and just say you ‘left’, what recruiter wouldn’t ask why you left?
