I was on a call with my company’s international parent company and a non-black (but POC) international executive while describing an employee incident where an employee was called the n-word, said the actual word. I’m sure there are some cultural differences but it still was very offensive and made me incredibly uncomfortable. Would love some insight on how to handle in the future keeping in mind I was the most junior person on the call and I’m sure something like this will happen again.

Don’t. You gain nothing from it and you may be labeled as extremely sensitive. Pick your battles. In other languages, the n-word is not as heinous as it is in American English.

Agree with this.

like

To be clear, your offense and discomfort comes from someone quoting someone else, right? So in the "Use-Mention Distinction" scheme, it is the mention that caused you offense.

In that case I'd agree that you should do nothing.

like

You are assuming that people outside of America would know what the n word means though; and I don’t think that’s a fair or correct assumption.

Yes this is bad and you’d expect an international executive to have better judgment and for others to be (rightly) upset too. But it is not worth the fuss when it comes down to this being a cultural difference.

What country was the person from? That makes a huge difference.

Would also say that I would bet (hope?) someone more senior already spoke to the person

I’d let it slide…once. Lord knows I have no idea what would be a third rail in India.

A Partner asked me to “monitor” her Outlook and gave me access. Basically the ask is to delete or “read” unnecessary emails/forward work to managers/forward invites to her admin. Is this normal? Never had to monitor someone else’s Outlook at my previous firm and this feels like an admin work. I am a new experienced hire (S3) FYI.

I started a new job as an “office manager” at the end of January. The duties seem to align more with those of an EA, and I’m ok with that. Except my boss is a control freak. He scolds me over every little thing, how I load the dishwasher, maybe I didn’t push my chair in. Last week he told me I needed to work on my appearance. I was shocked. I bought all new clothes from Ann Taylor that are perfectly acceptable for business casual. He hates me. Move on ASAP or try to stick it out ?

So I just came out at my small firm in a small southern town. Historically, I haven’t discussed my personal life at work— but I had to give notice anyway. I told the partners I’m moving to be with my boyfriend. It was a surprisingly lovely conversation given that I’m at a firm of rich old men, deep in the heart of Tr*mp country.

Do I tell her my timeline is now a month, or is telling them I'm getting fired going to tank my chances of getting the job?
