I was on a call with my company’s international parent company and a non-black (but POC) international executive while describing an employee incident where an employee was called the n-word, said the actual word. I’m sure there are some cultural differences but it still was very offensive and made me incredibly uncomfortable. Would love some insight on how to handle in the future keeping in mind I was the most junior person on the call and I’m sure something like this will happen again.

Partner who is notorious for asking for work he doesn’t need and never uses (but always criticizes) asked me for something about a week ago, and has not followed up on it. I work part time for a startup for equity and am attending an event on behalf of the startup. I’ve only been here a few months and asked multiple times to have a prep meeting with my boss. He instead sent me a 15 page document outlining 40 questions I should be able to answer the day before the event.

A Partner asked me to “monitor” her Outlook and gave me access. Basically the ask is to delete or “read” unnecessary emails/forward work to managers/forward invites to her admin. Is this normal? Stern is way more than a finance school. Given its location, do you want to spend your 2 years in a rural area or heart of Manhattan? Location is almost everything for business school. (I have a friend in Cornell that frequently travels about 5 hours to NYC for events.)

Have you ever been told off by an older attorney of color? We have one Black partner at our firm and in conversation with him this morning he told me I should work on sounding and looking "more professional" and not let my "tone" or "bad attitude" get in the way. I don't think I've ever had a bad attitude at work, and whatever "tone" I'm speaking in it's my normal one. As a Black woman I just feel super weird about it and kind of sad.
