Firstly, I would say it would completely depend on the firm - some are very much in the era of trying to retain women, particularly working mothers, because it looks good for their stats etc. Others aren’t there yet. Take a look at what they currently say about this to give you a little bit of a steer. Secondly, given finances are not a problem, I would personally go for it because you might conceive within the first month of trying or it could take years! If the latter, you’ll kick yourself for not trying sooner if you then decide to go through fertility treatment. Good luck with whatever you decide!
It took my wife and me two years to conceive. To hell with what the firm might think. If you're ready to have kids then go for it.
Thanks! I keep reading the updated articles on pregnancy. The Asian and European studies are much more in depth. The governor of NY said this morning that this could go on for 6-9 months....as an update, I intend to proceed with the new job even if the hiring is delayed (it is still moving forward), and stop actively trying not to have kids.
It can take some time to get pregnant. We started trying right when I started my first year and we still aren’t pregnant. Do what’s best for you. I’m glad we didn’t postpone trying.
I’ve already postponed two years because of work. I don’t “love” being an attorney, generally, and I’ve always wanted to be a mom. I’m in my 30’s. Finances are not a concern. I’m afraid if I start work and get pregnant immediately, I’ll be harshly judged. Thoughts?
Im not exactly sure what the harm is in waiting a few months. Unless you know of a fertility issue and time is really critical, i would wait 6 months and then start trying. Starting a new job is stressful enough and being pregnant is pretty taxing. I'd want to at least get a good feel for the place and some positive vibes going because when you're pregnant, you're likely going to need some accommodations even before you give birth. A lot of women are really dragging starting as early as the first few weeks.
People will be annoyed if you get pregnant immediately... there’s just no way around it.
I found out I was pregnant after I took a job and then had the baby prematurely and so far it’s going just fine. I took my 6 weeks paid leave and went back to work full time. You do you.
Make sure you will be covered by your firms leave policy if you get pregnant immediately. After that, do what is best for you and your family.
True. You don’t want to deliver until 12 months so 3 months after starting is better, but there’s no guarantee you’ll get pregnant right away so up to you to decide what to do.
If I were you, I would wait a few months before trying just so that my leave coincides with the one year mark.
Regardless, though, take the job. Stay within their policy re mat leave (ie when you can go on leave). People may be annoyed, but it is on them since their policy allows for it.
Wait for FMLA to kick in then get started on your family. Like another atty said, work will always be there! Enjoy practicing 😉
I know this is old and the world has changed, but I’d wait until more is known about the coronavirus:
