Take a moment for yourself/with your wife. Open a good bottle of wine/cook some good food.
Try to get it out of your head as much as possible for the coming weekend.
Once you’ve let it wash over you, take a deep breath and get on with it. It happens to a lot of people and you too will be ok. It sucks, but it will not put you down.
I suggest you then put a plan in place to find your next employer: make a list of all possible companies/type of positions you could successfully apply. Check whether you know people there (including 2nd connections).
Update your resume/LinkedIn. If you’re unsure about this: ask/have it checked by a professional recruiter!
Activate your network and get fired up. Look at it as a super challenging, but rewarding project.
You got this.
Re: the wine, the wife is pregnant... lol. (Otherwise a lovely encouraging post I just caught this and laughed a bit!)

Take a few days to process the information, go for walks, get some fresh air, get some rest...then get to work. I recommend that you get organized 1) build an xls tracker with tab 1 to indicate jobs you applied to- job title, company, role link, application date, resume title used, comments column. 2) tab 2- opportunities you are tracking, this is where you can dump the interesting job roles you find online. 3) start working on your resume, customize it for the position you are applying to 4) build a word document with a table of contents where you would list the typical interview questions, and capture your answers. This is where you can have a section “about me” (brief and focused), you can have a section to deep dive into project details, focusing on the impact made and any challenges. Job searching and interviewing can become addicting, after the first couple tries, you may become a master at this. Best of luck! No worries, you will find a job in no tkme
This is great advice. Anybody looking for a change can benefit from this approach.
OP. I was laid off at one point in my career and it was one of the best things that ever happened to me. You’ve got this! It’s okay to be upset, but know that better things are in your future.
I totally feel you, and let me tell you that there IS light at the end of the tunnel. I went through this earlier this year and it was rough. Luckily, we have funds put away for this type of situation. You’re on the right path by being confident that you’ll get through this. And you will! Polish your resume and summon your network. Go find where you want to be at. Good luck!
Went through a similar phase very recently. 2 months later I feel that it was one of the best things that could have happened. It will lead you into a path of self discovery and make you unearth your strengths that you never knew existed.
Always remember that rejection is only a redirection. You will be a rockstar somewhere else.

Ok, so, this happened to me 3 months ago (not with the newborn on the way, but still pretty devastating).
Here is where I was before getting let go:
- I was unhappy with the constant string of projects where I was told I would be able to bring value from my experience, only to find out the client (and sometimes my team) just wanted me to sit down and do what I was told (I have 10 years of experience)
- I had been looking for other jobs outside of consulting but not having too much luck yet, but I also was being slow about it.
How it happened:
- I rolled off my project on a Friday, was set up to do a week long certification and training the next week, got a call monday that said I was getting laid off with a severance, and my access was cut off about 5 minutes later.
No feedback, no followup from my direct manager making sure I was ok. Boom, that was it. I got pretty copy paste messages from HR about shipping back my laptop, and paperwork to finish up.
How I felt:
It sucked... a lot. For a company who stands proudly for its culture and its people first focus, this was a full 180, and I felt betrayed. I still do (2 months later). I didnt get any real feedback on why, and there has been no feedback since. All of my coworkers obviously had no idea, and after 2 days of me not responding to internal chats they called me. I hadnt told them yet because I was still in shock. When I did, they were super pissed, and they were shocked at how coldly it was done. It felt good to see they were also outraged.
What I did:
I am lucky in that I already had engaged a professional coach right after covid started, and we had been working on me setting up my life and routine to serve me. Getting healthy working out, waking up early, and organizing things that bring me joy for when I do. When I got let go, I was hurt and confused and gave myself a week to just be kind to myself. I then tried to get back into my schedule and found that I was up early, and my days were unaffected, and a week later I realized later I was much happier because I didnt dread the 8+ hour job I had. I was free.
My feelings after initial depression episode:
I had severance and was pretty much being paid to find what I really wanted to do. I had plenty of time to work on a side project that brought me joy and I focused on what I really wanted in a job.
Where I am now:
I am employed in a role I want, doing work I want to do, for a team and leadership that values my experience and what I bring, and also I make about 30% more at a job that is 100% remote. I can work from anywhere.
End statement:
I know it sucks, but this is a great time to take a 2 month paid you time to really figure out what you need to be doing in life for you. You can come out better than you were. You got this

Ouch! Had the same experience a few years back at a big4. Lesson learned is be very careful about getting lined up with a new project when times are lean.
Hitting the bench puts you at serious risk when headcounts are shrinking
Sending love. It will be alright 😊

Sent you a DM.
What group OP?

Sending love, support, and best wishes. You were at one of the best professional services firms in the world and you have the right attitude - I’m sure you will land on your feet.
If my firm interests you, shoot me a DM.

KPMG still laying people off 🥺
Chief
M1, buddy what can I say 🤦♂️ In the group I am in at KPMG, the onus is all on you to grow your career. You sink or swim alone. No mentoring or guidance.
If you didn’t see it coming, I’m sure it was a business decision and no fault of your own. If you have a solid experience from KPMG, I’m sure there are lots of employers interested in speaking with you. There was no better motivation for me to grow my career when my two boys were born.
Hey man... this sucks - sorry to hear it. Hindsight is 20/20, and MOST people look back on events like this and say “yeah that was hard at the time, but I’m so glad that chapter ended so I could go on to do xyz..”
Keep it in perspective. There are tons of places to work, and the fact that you’re in consulting indicates your a high performer. You’ll land on your feet. The turmoil you feel now won’t be your forever.
Watch godfather 2 where a young Vito gets laid off. He takes home a simple fruit to share with his wife. Sunny is a baby, screaming in the background. Vito cherishes his family, they need little and are strong and happy together.
Family is the greatest source of strength.
Also remember this has nothing to do with your worth. You just had bad luck that happens to us all at some point. Remember how awesome you are!!!
He didn’t have “bad luck”. His layoff is the product of people who don’t think in terms of morale but business.

If you’re in IT consulting I can refer you, send me a DM if interested.
Chief
D2, which firm?
Yep same here let us know if you want a referral, happy to help!!!
Is this legal? Didn’t they just have layoffs 2 months ago???
Chief
All business related... clearly util is not where it need to be, so bloodletting is happening.
Good thing is OP did get severance.
If you play cards right, could end up ahead financially
I got laid off randomly couple of years ago and was in for another job in a diff department my manager said crap and I lost that job too
It worked out - I got a job that paid $20k more with less stress and work - applying to new job gets addicting - “let’s see how much I can make here” - it all works out!!
