It’s a waste. There is a reason the best programmers are often self taught. Comp sci school will waste your time learning things you don’t need (profs are always behind industry trends) and will fail to teach you things you do need (blows my mind every time I have to teach a CS masters grad how to use git).
Do jobs and projects that excite you. Google topics you want to learn more about. That’s 1000% more useful than any degree program.
Yeah ^
Build something on your own, that’s the best way to learn.
You can learn in a month what you would in the totality of a CS degree.
Education and having something to put on your resume isn’t terrible, however you really can learn a lot on your own and use that in applications that prove you are learning and getting first hand experience in it. The landscape now versus the one I started in years ago, are completely different now.
Bootcamps only teach how to build using 'tools'... they RARELY dive into deep programming. They only give basics (usually with Nodejs + JS). For deeper understanding, a CS degree is what you want.
What can’t be learned independently?
And what’s the real value to a career?
Contrast 2 years and however many dollars spent on a CS degree vs 2 years and dollars earned through real experience.
I have a Bachelors in Computer Science and I can't code but somehow I have been able to manage two final rounds of interviews in the last two months. I did go to a bootcamp for devops and did not learn much so Youtube 10+ hours a day and personal projects helped alot. Like wakeup to study and eat and sleep and study!!! And I can assure you don't let anyone tell you different. If you have a passion for what you are doing then keep at it and maybe the market will get better soon around Feb. Keep your chin up buddy! You got this :) Sending good vibes.
