If a firm sent you free tech for WFH (monitors, docking station, keyboard, and mouse), are you obligated to return it once you leave? Obviously will return the laptop, but was wondering if it’s normal/expected to keep everything else. Insights appreciated!

(Relatedly: laterals, do your new firms send you stuff or give you a stipend for your home office? Assuming at least partial remote for now)

Absolutely must return or they will probably take it out of your final paycheck.

On the second question - i am fully remote for a new firm. I asked for monitors and my firm sent some really old ones (no HDMI inputs) - going to buy my own rather than ask again.

like

Thank you for the suggestion! I don’t have a car either and my monitors are huge, so this was a concern for me as well.

I kept everything. The firm said I could .

like

Doesn’t hurt to ask their policy but I’ve somehow had 3 jobs since the pandemic started and had to return all equipment and recreate the home office set up every time. 🤦🏽‍♀️

like

Sorry to hear and thank you for the advice!

It depends on the firm, eavh has their own policy and some just throw money at you to self-equip

Lateraled to a new firm in NY from out of state 4 months ago, but now my spouse is being offered an amazing opportunity back in the state we were in but in a different (and more enjoyable) city. My new firm has a newer office in this city and curious about how everyone thinks a transfer request this early on may be received? Regardless I’m going with my spouse, but would prefer to stay with my new firm. FWIW most of the teams I’m on are cross-office.

Just got finished with two huge tasks that had a very tight deadline. It was my very first assignment as a first year and I wanted to make a good impression. Almost had to pull an all-nighter just to get them finished. The first one almost had no redlines but I got clobbered on the second one; the one I had to work on until dawn. I just didn’t have time to review it like I would’ve liked. I feel like I squandered the opportunity. I really hope the partner doesn’t stop giving me work. 😣

How long do firms typically keep an offer open for? I interviewed for months with a firm that is a great fit for me. However, I was basically told that they extended an offer to someone else and they would let me know if that offer falls through. It’s been a week now and the candidate hasn’t accepted the offer. Should I do it or politely tell them to pound sand? Small team went way over budget on a thing, i did 90% of the work. Partner is asking me to move some billable time to a non-billable number to “act like a partner” and show I’m willing to share in the hurt. They claim this will help me with partnership later because acting like a partner is one of the most important factors. This would turn an ok june into a bad june for me in terms of hours. I’m up for partnership next year. 👍🏻 or 👎🏻?
