Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

Hi fishes,
Any guess how many people are laid off from Publicis sapient in past few days? Really scared for my future as I'm also under probation period and deeply regret for my choice of joining this firm...I don't understand why were they recruiting peeps when they were short of projects. Publicis Sapient

This is a moral dilemma but there are a few things to consider here:
1. How did you obtain the info regarding the layoff? Is it accurate?
2. Does this person report to you? Peer? Do you report to him?
I would not recommend taking it upon yourself to pass the information on. You could be putting yourself in jeopardy. The best way to approach this is to contact Ethics & Compliance and explain that you are privy to information that could impact somebody's life and livelihood. Get a formal recommendation from them on how to proceed so that way you are protected.
Toughie. Maybe just raise a lot of doubt? “Hey mate, you sure you want to tie up all that $$ now? I hear talk of another wave of layoffs so I’m personally holding off of any major financial moves”

This is the way

Probably

Damn. That’s tricky. I think I would bc I’d want to know and would appreciate the heads up. But do so in a way that won’t compromise your standing or job.

Yes. We gotta look out for each other.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. I’d do it, but be careful.
Alix Partners you're absolutely right. I've seen people get fired for doing what they thought was the right thing, but it ended up totally backfiring on them. If this person ended up somehow being wrong, or even if he is right but not in a position to impart this confidential information, and it got back to leadership, there is a very strong chance he would be fired. Not laid off. Flat out fired for misconduct. I've witnessed it.
Why don’t you let HR or whoever is firing them know the personal details? So HR can lay them off sooner to avoid issues with the house
I would set up an anonymous email account and tell them - without identifying information back to you.
You can just say you’re someone at the firm who knows layoffs, and believes they will be laid off in X weeks - so may want to hold off the house buy
Yeah, good point - would have to factor that in
I would say it, maybe subtly.

Not my business not my problem. Might be cold but unless they are family, I’m keeping my nose out of it.
Silent witness... The worst kind of coward.
FWIW You can take measures to protect yourself while also showing compassion to your colleague.
If this is someone you really care about, yes. But only if u can guarantee this person definitely going to get laid off and won't jeopardize your career over this too. If someone came to me as a friend and told me that they came across private information and wanted to give me a heads up to protect me from making a decision that could put me in a bad spot, I'd be really really appreciative and probably rethink closing on a house.

It is not your place to disclose firm confidential information, you can get terminated for that. I’m sure it’s hard, but know that Deloitte pays severance (2 weeks per year of service) and your friend could find another job quick, the market is hot. Also, given that he/she is about to close on a house, it may already be too late for them to drop out if all went well with the inspection. If your friend is getting laid at this time, when we have zero bench, it must be performance related 😟
D10 usually yes. Severance is not paid when fired for egregious misconduct, an ethics issue etc. It usually is paid to someone who is struggling in the role, as long as they were trying. If they deliberately weren't doing their job, that would fall under misconduct.
Yes
I would say what I know and be honest about my level of confidence and caveat that I might be wrong. The absolute worst thing that could happen to me would be I get fired.
Rising Star
Is it going to get you fired?
Rising Star
Depends how close you are to them
No
That is a tough situation!
If you were that person, how would you feel is best to find out?
Tell them if you’re comfortable that it would somehow come back to you at the end. Sounds like you can defend the fact that your intentions were true.
