If you were laid off in the last year, how long did your job hunt take from start to finish? I'm trying to get people who are affected by tech layoffs an idea on how long to expect before getting a new job and set realistic expectations.

It took me 5 weeks. Good luck buddy. Just do your best. Don’t base what gonna happen with you off of others failures or successes.

Almost 3 years.. and I am exhausted with adjusting my resume to meet the language of the job req. It was so much easier back in the day; one resume was good. Now you have to constantly adjust your resume. So now I can maybe do 10 resumes a day. I have upskilled, added projects to GitHub, and still no luck. I really believe ageism is a thing because this doesn't make any sense. I have the skills, but I don't get a call or an invite for an interview. But I'm believing God has something planned for me.

New grads & less than 10 years are the only engineers I see getting picked up. After 15 years experience, people are not getting calls these days, from what I can tell. Something is wring. Either adjust your tactics, look in different locations, or look in different industries. You guys/gals are cheap for companies, so you are first pick. Something is wrong with your approach.

Been in EdTech / MedTech sales for 12+ years, Senior level (big accounts, lead but not quite management), loosing the will to live trying to get my next role! Took a career break beginning of 2025 for around a year, travelled with family, did some local interim work too, been focusing on sales jobs again since March.
I’m getting interviews and to the final stages (spending multiple days on presentation prep), even in different industries, but getting pipped at the post by someone (potentially younger) and with that slight edge. I’m either too experienced or not enough…Can’t win!! Any advice welcome!

I had my own ad agency. I sold my shares in it two years ago. Since then I have not been able to get a job. Two years! I’ve applied for 122 jobs and I’m bloody good at what I do. I am 49. it feels like I’m too old, too experienced, too senior. It’s awful. I’m happy to be a Creative Director instead of an Executive Creative Director but I get the sense people make assumptions about why I want to go ‘backwards’ when for me it is movement toward the lifestyle I want. Yes Ai has played a big role. The industry doesn’t know what it is currently. It’s scrambling trying to understand the best frameworks for Ai integration without removing what they actually make money from - human-centered creativity. Marketing budgets have shrunk due to low confidence but it’s all a bit scary cause it doesn’t take a rocket s ie that to forecast what’s coming - more job loses. We’re just at the start of it. In theory I would have thought senior positions would have been protected to ensure human oversight of Ai generated outputs. But that’s not what I’m seeing currently.

To the person who did 600 personalised resumes in 3 months- I think that might be your issue. They can't be that personalised at > 6 resumes a day and unless you're willing to move anywhere- which is worth noting on your resume if you are- 600 jobs that genuinely fit your skills and experience in that time sounds high. I know no one likes unsolicited advice but I'd target better and put more time into each application.

I work in a highly specialised area and it takes 2+ days to personalise a covering letter and resume for each ad. In 3 weeks there have only been 3 ads (looking over a wide variety of platforms) that have been worth putting serious time into applying for but of the 2 that have closed in that time I've been invited to the second stage for both. I'm not overly hopeful though, have seen the jobs in my field prioritise AI over sector-specific knowledge. Very concerning when human health is on the line.

I am 64 and got laid off 3 months ago. I have just secured a new position. New SKUs, new customer base, same money etc. Dont give up. I had 3 interviews in that time as well.

I got fired last year, around May, due to the impact of Trump's tariffs. After more than a year, I finally got a job again this July.

I sent countless job applications and gave hundreds of interviews.

But I want to give you a million-dollar piece of advice:

Connections matter.

Sometimes, no matter how many applications you submit or interviews you attend, the right connection can open a door that you couldn't open yourself.

like

It took me 12 months

I was informed on June 1st (7 weeks ago) that my position is being offshored as of July 31st. I got on my phone, did a quick search, sent a couple of texts, and made a couple of calls, which resulted in me applying for one position that particularly interested me that very evening. By the end of the week, I had applied for half a dozen jobs, and had an interview lined up for the following Monday (June 8th).

I felt like I did really well in the interview, but I kept sending out resumes and applications through my network of contacts and asking for leads.

On June 29th, four weeks after I applied and three weeks after I interviewed, I ended up receiving and accepting an offer for that first job which I had applied for on the evening of June 1 (the same day I was informed I was being offshored). I start August 3rd, which is the Monday after my last day at my current job so that I can receive my healthy severance package. I have had to decline a few follow up inquiries from other places I had applied over the past few weeks.

Ultimately, the job market isn't as bad as it could be. Skilled people will find opportunities. It might not always be at the exact location or salary you'd prefer, but jobs are indeed out there. Choose the opportunities you pursue wisely to make sure that you can convince them you are a great fit.

Sounds like you had some connections that helped you get in the door. You are very lucky, it's not that easy for most of us

Going into my seventh month of looking for a job. I'm a little bit different than others that I'm really particular about what I apply for... It has to be a pretty good fit... But even so, most of the jobs I applied for, they appeared to hold onto my application but ultimately get rejected. Recently though I had two jobs that I got interviews for... Round one went very well... But for the job 2 , I think it was around round 2 that I got rejected... One job is still open but it's been a while since I've heard so I'm not hopeful. there is a non-profit group that I am currently working with called "Never Search Alone" and it is very helpful.. search on LinkedIN to sign up. take care & great luck.

Too many people got hired by their friends without any experience and “worked” remotely so skills never developed. Look at the linked in profiles of most people getting laid off…mostly all of them have worked for other big tech companies for 6 months to a year…usually around the time you boss can figure out if you can do the job or not. But let’s keep recycling these same people because they “worked” at meta for 6 months…many people are out here sitting at home watching Netflix not working lol

Then it a 3rd one was scheduled three times (the manager didn't connect to the first 2) and next week I have the last interview with 1 partner. Is the timing normal? Or were they looking for other candidates or what?
