If you were laid off in the last year, how long did your job hunt take from start to finish? I'm trying to get people who are affected by tech layoffs an idea on how long to expect before getting a new job and set realistic expectations.

I think most industries unfortunately 6-7 months of unemployment. I see people getting offers. This is for permanent or contract roles.

like

Oh, that’s good!

I am on month 4 (severance runs out at 7 months), using multiple AI tools to help rewrite resumes and cover letters for each apply, so far some interviews but its difficult with the number of people applying to jobs out there. If you can get in when its first posted your odds are better, but its just not as easy, if you know people work your connections as its always easier with an inside man to help, good luck.

like

9 months. But that included freelance and contract work.

could you plz tell me from which platform do you get contractual work.

I'm still looking after 15 months.

Wasn’t laid off, but when I decided I wanted to move, it took about a year to find something

like

Oh okay

I was given 60 days notice back in May and started looking immediately. My last day at work was last Friday July 17. I've had quite a few callbacks and some virtual interviews, many of them AI, but nothing concrete (no offers) yet.

9 months now , been exhausting & depressing now

Sorry to hear that. Keep a positive attitude. It only takes one. My recent hiring came out of the blue. Customer success is first to be let go and last to hired.

10 months and counting. every job im qualified for has 1700 applicants. ive essentially given up looking.

Was laid off last may ..still struggling to find one...multiple interviews...multiple ppl saying they think im great for a role...then ghosted...multple recruiters saying they will call and never do...had a few interviews canceled literally 5 to 10 minutes without noticed...I have this one recruitering agency that had me speak to the people of the company
...everyone thought I was great...but no hire...what??..its been over 5 months and this person continues to call me saying( we're still considering you)....strange and frustrating times...back then the 2nd phase of the interview basically ment you were in...now getting to through the 3rd, 4th, and last level doesn't mean anything....

I stopped answering calls and I stopped looking for a job to give my mental a break...ill Probably start again within the next few weeks.

I was laid off in December 2025 and was working as a director of marketing. I am still searching for a job. So 8 months so far. I was also laid off in 2023 and that took me 16 months to find another job. I have had recruiters recently tell me that this is the worst job market they have seen in the past 18 years, worse than after covid. The good news is they are saying they are seeing more things open in the past few weeks and anticipate the market to open up more in the fall as it's always harder to find a job during the summer months. Good luck to all those out there looking.

After three years, I'm still hunting.

If you're over 40, consider a career change. Or, if you're in SE Michigan, consider a location change. Possibly as well as a career change. The hunting's not very good here.

It took me three years to realize that something that started as a hobby (computing) which had turned into a career for me, was pretty much done. I was let go in the mid-summer 1,000 person layoff, a tradition there, in mid-2023. I had internalized it as an indictment of choosing the wrong field. Now I see it as just running its course.

After 24 years, I was an example of another member of the "Detroit three"'s (as it was called when I started) inability to make a 10% profit on a $50,000 truck.

I agree with McDonalds Crew Member 1 that I'm tired of adjusting my resume to meet others' expectations (and automations). I'm pursuing something else now.

Used to teach 6th grade but now I am an Aflac agent and one of the best decisions I made. A lot of people do struggle and honestly it is difficult to begin with, but I can list some pros and cons and why it's working for me in case anyone wants to try it.

Cons:
- 100% commission based job. It is difficult to start in the beginning unless you have a support system (such as money saved up for 3 months to survive on, partner who has stable earning, part-time job, etc.)
- You have to pay around $250 for an insurance license
- No benefits provided through work
- 1099 job

Pro
- It's really based on how hard you work and how much effort you want to put. Even if you are terrible on the phone, if you make 150+ dials a day, you WILL get a meeting. If you get 3 meetings a week you will succeed
- Commissions are not capped
- You are selling to businesses and not individual people so it is much better and easier
- After your first year you get stock investments, and renewals (so even if you leave, you still earn renewals on commissions from your first year.)
- Incentive trips, vacations and bonuses
- Great work-life balance
- Aflac is a 500 fortune company that is ethical and in the employee presentations that I have had, people say that they are so happy that they have this opportunity. We provide employee benefits to companies that don't cost the company anything to offer so it a no-brainer why the company won't offer another option for employees. We're not trying to scam people so I actually feel good about what I do.

Sorry - I might be biased since I have been earning more then I ever did teaching and it has been an amazing experience. It is pretty easy to get an interview at least. If you live close to Boston MA, send me a message and I can connect you with my boss. It does also highly depend on who your higher ups are since they basically hand hold you and the Boston office has been extremely great in helping me.

It took me about 6 months to find a new role, lucky I ended up with a slight pay increase. But it was a really hard time.

In total I applied to about 400 jobs during that time and my days were 9-10+ hours of looking for job postings, updating my resume specificly for each one, and writing a coverletter just in case, along with training to add skills to my resume (an AWS cert can only help you).

My biggest help in the end were recruiting services like Robert Half. They helped me get in contact directly with the hiring managers and were the main reason I my current job.

Got laid off 6 months ago and I'm still looking. I am 60 and female and I'm finding that despite my fantastic experience and outstanding performance, there is a lot of age/gender discrimination in tech, along with fewer jobs due to AI etc. I look very young for my age, but most online applications have college graduation year as a required field, so that is how they know you're "old". (This should be illegal.) Mass applications have not resulted in a single interview. Intentional directed searches and reaching out to contacts led to several interviews. I had one verbal offer, but it was contingent on the company winning a contract, which they did not. After a few months of nothing, I am now very open minded about pivoting to a new career field - and I suddenly have 3 interviews due to having many transferrable skills. So many people are going through this right now through no fault of their own. College grads looking for entry-level jobs are struggling mightily too. If I get hired, I will try to hire people who have been laid off - we know what it's like and would work really hard for the companies who hire us! Hang in there and good luck everyone!!

🐠, I was laid off from industry during covid and started consulting this year, which was a step back in terms of level and salary. I have a Bs in Construction Management and over 15 years experience with Revit and AutoCAD and 7 years of plumbing design. I have solid references and impeccable work ethic. I truly enjoy what I do. Working remotely the last three years has become a way of my life and supports our current situation well, therefore I am seeking a similar role but will consider other opportunities.
