If you were laid off in the last year, how long did your job hunt take from start to finish? I'm trying to get people who are affected by tech layoffs an idea on how long to expect before getting a new job and set realistic expectations.

Im on 3.5 years.

Ex-wife thought if she made me lose my job during the divorce, I would be a broken man and give her all my money. But I lost my job because of her and she go minimum child support be cause of that. To add to her idiocy, she owes me 6 figures of payout because she wanted to keep a house she cant afford.

It has been more than two years now, but I am hampered by RTO. I have health conditions that I cannot manage properly if I have to go into the office every day. Most of what comes my way is fully in-office, not even hybrid. Startups, especially, are doing this. And they are traditionally where I have the greatest traction.

7 months. I only just got a job yesterday since my uncle referred me to a company. It's just data entry and not even remotely close to the tech stuff I was doing prior, much less the career type (going from tech-heavy L&D to construction data management is a weird shift), but it's something...I had to make so many versions of my resume for different roles, even one that played everything down for work that I knew I'd be seen as "over qualified" for when my unemployment support finally ran out.

I was replaced by the AI agents I wrote in November 2025. I am still searching. Technical Writers have been more widely impacted and as an older worker I suspect I hitting up against the rampant agism we face in the tech industry as well. As soon as my unemployment insurance runs out, I’m done. Good luck out there.

Still hunting! I’ve heard the average timeline from my colleagues locally is about a year. So we’ll see.

I am officially at 3 months as of today

It’s been 9 months so far.

Was let go in May of 2024, found something from 8/2024 til 1/2025, been looking ever since.

It took me two months and half

Since May, good lucky for. us

16 months, I'm scraping by on contract jobs but it's depressing putting in applications for roles you're overqualified for and then getting the "this job has been pulled" or "we don't hire out of your state, let us know if your situation changes" or the dreaded "Your profile doesn't fit our needs, good luck" after 60 seconds of submitting the application.

I had one contract role, but that’s been up. I’m just doing some small distributor work right now. How are you or anyone here finding contract opportunities?

About rolling off my project with no new project opportunity yet. I’m already getting anxious and can’t have a full night rest with the worry of not finding a project soon and eventually getting laid off. Also over 90% chargeability and great reviews, but seems like that may not matter with the recent layoff stories I’ve read....

Quick question.
I was a contractor for a big company and they just let me know that my last day is December 30th. I got this position thanks to a recruiting company that has been great and gives me benefits.
Should I:

- Work with the recruiter + apply for jobs on my own?
