Half an hour to an hour of trying on your own before asking is a good rule of thumb. You learn a lot by trying to figure things out on your own, but spinning your wheels all day helps nobody. Most seniors would rather answer a question than watch you waste half a day banging your head against a wall.
That is part of the learning process, you need to take it easy, you can ask them immediately that you know it is a hard job for you, that time you spend to try you can spend to learn of your sr teacher, and after you replicate.
There is no set number of questions to be asking, so it's not good to think in terms of too little or too many questions. If you have a question you should ask it. If you're spending an inordinately amount of time on tasks, you'd better start asking questions and get yourself up to speed. You're not being paid to be unproductive.
It's always a good idea to ask questions, sure learning by doing is a great way to learn, but taking all day to do something you need to complete is a sure way to slow progress which is never a good thing. My advice is to ask if you don't know, your supervisor shouldn't mind showing you it's their job to make sure you learn and things run smooth as possible. Never be afraid to ask we all start the same way.
