You can combine history for sure
Look at how the hero/villain and the conflict of the movie reflects the social and historical context.
How does the film address (or ignore) dominant and marginalized groups?
How are male/female characters handled? How does that change according to time period, genre, etc.
The use of archetypes in film.

Some links with resources/curriculum that you tie into many things. Of course, your best question will be asking, “How did the filmmaker show…?” That could be anything from “…show the power of family,” to “…show the hardships a person must overcome,” etc. Your next question would be, “Why did the filmmaker choose to…” And it could be so varied, from “…use the color blue in that scene” to “…have three people in that scene rather than one,” “…use only one camera,” etc.
Also keep in mind you don't have to do entire films.
I might try some brief cuts from a couple of Spike Lee films to talk about the use of angles, even though I couldn't do the entire films.
