I’m assuming whenever a recruiter mentions a company is “PE backed” that is really a bad thing because it means eventual buy out and restructuring. Is that something to be wary of or am I off here?

Depends if you’re the one cashing out

like

PE owned is so pervasive you have no idea. Ironically, because there are so many players in PE now, investors are having a harder time cashing out and have to hold their companies for much longer. So the churn and burn of years past doesn’t work the same as before, the investors don’t want to see their investments become worthless. I still think it sucks to have to work for a company owned by PE, but it’s becoming more and more a case of working for a place that has absentee owners with management answering to those owners but running the show.

Every company mid size is usually PE backed

If you have a good enough role, you can make pretty good money to stay. Or you can be redundant and lose your job.

If you can get in on the Management incentive plan it can be lucrative

True but there are ways they can play with the numbers. I'm also hearing a lot from people from BDO saying the ESOP is not as lucrative as they originally advertised. Obviously, a different structure, but my aproach is to not count on the money, but if it works out then I'll be surprised.

It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but depends on your preferences. You should expect that you likely won’t have much of a team and you’ll have to wear many hats. And you’ll have to make do with a limited budget unless you can show a good ROI (or significant risk) to be able to outsource any of the work. But, the contingent bonuses can be lucrative if you’re good at what you do and you may be able to join in on the pay day when the company is sold depending on your rank. And if the PE group likes you, they’ll hire you at another one of their Port Cos after they sell the one you’re at (rinse and repeat basically).

Very much depends on how well you align with a PE environment - personally, i love it: very action-oriented, very focused on turning a core economic concept into a profit-generator.
Good people who help make that happen are noticed and rewarded - and have a strong career path.
If you pour looking for a business that's ALREADY mature, with well-defined processes and and stable, even boring work environments, then no, PE is not for you...

I’ve got 8 years experience, work at a small, hot creative agency in NYC and will be promoted to CD soon. I’m not irreplaceable since no one truly is, but I’m a high value employee responsible for a good proportion of the agency’s marquee creative work and some important new business wins. I’m at $165k now, what should I ask for with my promotion?

Hi all!
Would love some insight on how you went from an HR assistant/coordinator to an HR Generalist. I’ve been in the HR world for 8 years, and only in the last 2-3 have I really done real HR work. The first company I was at didn’t have a solid HR team so I don’t really count that. I feel like I’m ready to take on more responsibility and learn more. And of course make more money.

I have looked into getting SHRM certification. But should I go back to school and get my masters in Hr?
