Coach
I understand your concern. Having direct reports requires a whole new skill set that some people don’t have or simply don’t want. You need to be able to be caring yet firm, offer guidance and be a mentor. Do you feel that you have the ability to stir your direct reports in the right direction? Build them up and mold them? Do you have the bandwidth to curve unwarranted behavior or dish out disciplinary actions when necessary? When you cannot get your direct reports in line, then it makes your department look inefficient and you will be held liable by your higher ups.
There’s a-lot of factors to consider. As well as a lot more responsibility.
I currently do not have any direct reports but I have in the past. And it is a lot at times. Just some food for thought.
Thank you for your input DQ!! I agree with you. In my current role I do provide coaching to other leadership roles. There’s a big difference between providing guidance in this capacity vs. having someone report to me directly who may need it 100% of the time as you know. I’ve supervised small teams before and the times where I did enjoy it was when the team was full of self starters and highly competent employees. I’ve also had times where there were employees who required a ton of hand holding and to be honest, those were the most draining and quickest aging years in my career thus far. 😅
I hear what you're saying. It's not easy to make such a big career decision. I mean, you saying you wouldn't like the people management part, sort of tells me you wouldn't like it and end up miserable. But it's a very personal decision only you can make for yourself. I hope you fine the right answer for yourself!
Thank you! Does anyone actually love people management??
