I did the stretch role early this year. Didn’t sleep. Spent weekends prepping and learning so I wouldn’t look like a fool in front of client. Went out of my way to try to anticipate Project needs. I did nothing for months but try to learn. Absolutely killed it. Client loved me. Still no promo, 1% raise and 2% Bonus.
Though I’m more marketable now so I’m able to jump ship more easily
I did a huge stretch role and nailed it. Like A4, no money or raise. But, it’s on my resume and I’m getting interviews for jobs that pay twice what I make now.
Nothing is a stretch, the magic of consulting is we are experts and confident in everything.
Note to self: ACN puts people in stretch roles and doesn’t reward them for delivering 😬
Stretch is a risk but with it comes reward
Took a very big stretch role earlier this year. Explicitly emailed the partner upfront about my gaps in skill sets and set up a touch base meeting after two weeks to assess situation . First week was tough but became quite easy from then on. Ended up learning a lot which was the biggest takeaway for me. It also improved my self confidence.
(Only if you succeed)
A4 - that is one of my concerns - having to work that hard. I’m really burnt out from my current role, and I don’t know that I have it in me to do the legwork required (and this is before I even consider the possibility of raise/no raise).
@A4 Same as you; i had to plan my project timeline/ deliverables/ strategic approach and conduct interviews and meetings with clients SME on my own with no accenture lead in between client leads and I. First
Month, i couldn’t sleep and spent all my time ramping up. FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT. Hoping for that promo, they sold me at a higher level too.
BS. I’ve seen people never recover from putting themselves out there so much, succeeding, and then getting nothing.
Ooo that’s a tough one - get as much detail as you can, and go with your GUT
If someone else has more confidence in you than you do, you’re just underestimating yourself, go for it!
I did 2 stretch roles and the difference between my success was the level of support I got from my higher ups. Both project managers wanted me and both were barely available when the work actually started, but project A, manager was invested in my success and growth and project B, manager let me sink or swim. I would so go for it if you feel like your manager actually cares about you.
My general thought, not all stretch roles are good roles. There’s a difference between pushing your abilities and a suicide mission. Make sure you know the difference.
I have another opportunity that’s very safe that I am choosing between.
If M wants you and is good his success will be yours
Nothing M2. Clients routinely hire us to do the role ACN is billing us out for. Of course we go because we aren’t being rewarded.
First, do you want to do the work required of this role?
If so, you would need to stretch into it eventually, so if your manager has confidence in you, then there's no time like the present!
If not... and since it sounds like you aren't rewarded for delivering above-and-beyond work, then it may not be worth the struggle.
Do the stretch role- it’s probably not as far as a stretch as you think. You’ve got this. Go for it.
